Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Root of Nightmares raid lore book tells us about a moment when Mara Sov reached out and made contact with the Witness. Doing so left her dead, but before she died, she experienced the Witness's mind and above all, felt the rage within it. A rage that could burn the universe to cinders.

The Witness is so strong and all, but he’s not faced 6 guardians standing on plates yet…

The fact that beneath the calm exterior and the soft tones the Witness speaks in, exists what Mara describes as "a rage to burn the stars to cinders" I feel only makes the Witness far more terrifying.

One thing about that scene of Calus that some people missed is the witness’s shadow getting bigger. Given that Oryx referred to the voice in the dark as “the formless one” i wonder if the form of the witness we see is simply how it wishes to be perceived, but when Calus angered it, the Witness showed it’s true form for a brief moment and that why Calus was bleeding, as he struggled to comprehend seeing the Witness true form

Knowing that Mara has a habit of taking things of her enemies and such and making them her own I imagine she wasnt trying to destroy a pyramid but to control it, and given how the Witness cares little for anything it may have simply drstroyed it itself in order to deny her for no other reason than to do so. To show it is in control and no one else

Brett Dalton (the actor from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) is fantastic as The Witness. Absolutely love how much emotional range he brings. Especially the RAGE.

I have always been intrigued by the idea that if an individual was constantly in a hyperactive state of emotion; rage, fear, love, joy etc. That it would be their baseline. That an individual could be in a state of heightened rage for so long that they would appear calm. That they would be consumed by fear unimagined but not be phased by any horror. That their baseline was so wildly off what could be considered a "norm" that it loops back around to the opposite. Basically, that they would be desensitized to the nth degree because it's the only thing they have ever known. With rage, you could be angry at everything and anything to the point that you don't know what to be angry against and ironically loop back to being ok and calm with everything. That's what could be driving The Witness. They are just so damn angry at the universe itself, to existence itself that they can't be trully angry at anything specific when you're already angry at eveything else already. Which also makes Calus impressive in that he managed to tip the scales just enough to throw off that equilibrium. A cosmic achievent.
  • You know, mouthy though he was, Calus was onto something when he spoke with the Witness that one time

I love the idea that Eris can command lesser hive

I just like to imagine each upload is like a hearing in some room where all us guardians pop a squat just for byf to speak
  • @Kerosiin
One thing that is so absurd to me is that they’re keeping Eris’ disbelief/distrust in pineapples consistent from the season of arrivals to witch queen Byf we need a video on pineapple lore in destiny and Eris’ connection to them

The line of calus saying infinite apologies hits every time.
  • @Jimtheneals
I just noticed in the Calus cutscene that when the witness yells at Calus and Calus starts to grovel, he is bleeding under his mask.

That the Witness is so blunt with its tools shows how little care it has for them. It must have taken a lot of pain to cause that much rage, enough to make you use the final god of pain as a minion and chase the Traveler; I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the mysterious robed figure we see if the Witnesses true target, only losing your other half could drive you so far.

Makes more sense as to why the Vow shaders and armor are called “Resonant Fury” and “Echoed Anger”.
  • @Whiteknight-xg2pq
Interesting, it doesn't look like a broken pane of glass but like a shattering orb around Calus. Wait...so is Calus and the other disciples only here because the Witness wills it? Because now that I've seen the cutscene again, it doesn't seem like a threat of death but entirely Total Existential Annihilation.
  • @SinisterOL
I love a villain who has clam demeanour on the outside but has a deep rage on the inside
  • When you consider that the Witness told Calus about it's own purpose and what it said to the Traveler at the end of the Lightfall campaign, I am more curious than ever about what caused that rage burning inside that shell made of calm and control.
  • @kickthagreat9352
That's my favorite part when kallus pissed off the witness. And woke up like it was a bad dream 😆😆
  • @horrorpleb249
I find it amazing that we get to see the witnesses anger first hand in lightfall through a cutscene. The immense rage it felt when Calus talked back to it shows just how powerful it is when merely speaking to someone or something. I also feel that rage is an essential weakness, at least thats what I theorise.

"The music may imply that the Witness is not as in control as you might think." - Bungie Lightfall Music Video To think a being as powerful as the Witness is capable of such rage is both intriguing and concerning. I wonder what else will we learn about the Witness this year...
