Two Albion Regent swords, made 14 years apart

Published 2019-04-19
A pair of Regent longswords produced by Albion Swords of New Glaurus, Wisconsin. The bottom example was made in 2005, just a year after Albion introduced the sword. The upper example is brand-new, produced at the beginning of 2019.

The Regent was first introduced with a thinner, more needlelike point formed by a blade that is broader for most its length before tapering sharply near the tip. The blade was changed circa 2006 to the form seen in the newer sword, which has a more triangular blade profile overall.

Scabbards were made by Christian Fletcher of Boise, Idaho, contemporary to each sword as they were produced. The differences between the hilts are simply cosmetic options.

The older sword looks WAY better in my opinion, more elegant and traditional and superior in finish quality too. The look on the new one reflects a lot of machine works

Before anyone asks: the black scabbard goes with the older sword (with the brown hilt) while the brown scabbard was made for the new sword in the black/wire wrapped hilt. Matching the scabbard to grip color may seem the sensible way to go, but I wanted to bring some contrast between the grip and scabbard. Unfortunately, all the differences in the blades also means I can't swap the scabbards between the two swords even if I wanted to. Despite having a wire wrap, the newer sword is actually lighter by an ounce: the 2005 version is 3 pounds 5 ounces (1.50 kg). One difference I can't be sure of are their steel compositions. I know for certain the new sword is 6150 alloy steel, as that is what Albion keeps in stock in this day and age. The issue is that 2005 was a different time: this was before the Great Recession and just around the time China's infrastructure boom drove up US steel prices to where it affected the market for materials. The older sword could be 6150, but it could also be something like 5160 steel instead.

Could you tell me the width and thickness of the grip of Albion Regent at the crossguard?

Is the old sword's guard and pommel the antique finish? Looks awesome! What is the leather color's name?

I feel like the older regent has a pointier point than the new one, and the blade is finished to a higher polish. Is that correct?
