Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with recently “canceled” comedian Matt Rife. They discuss the incident in question, his viral response, the prominence of crowd work in his act, his early career start at the age of 15, the innovative use of social media to build his name, and the real reason he remains unapologetic for having a sense of humor.

Matthew Steven Rife was born in 1995 and is an American stand up comedian and actor. He started early, entering a school talent show at the age of 14 after being encouraged by a friend. Finding this to be a success, he went professional the next year at age 15. Using TikTok, he managed to consistently go viral with his stand up and "red flag" crowd work. He then entered the arena full time, using social media to grow his name before producing three straight-to-YouTube comedy specials from 2021 to 2023. This year, he debuted his first Netflix special, "Natural Selection."

This episode was filmed on November 22, 2023

i’ve been disabled with chronic illnesses since childhood, and i’ve been in a wheelchair for the past 10 years since i became an amputee, and nothing makes me happier than LAUGHING!!! people walk on eggshells around me all the time, and i watched one of matt’s shows where he joked with a girl in a wheelchair, and he wasn’t demeaning in any way whatsoever which was incredibly endearing. btw, the girl laughed her ass off and thanked him for INCLUDING US!!! i don’t go to a comedy show to get upset and defensive. i’m SO glad that you didn’t apologize for what he said, and i’m even happier than matt isn’t allowing himself to get canceled. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I've never seen a 28 year old talk with so much composure, wisdom and clarity. You've raised yourself so well Matt Rife. Damn bro. Tou are so respectful and self aware. God bless you abundantly.

every time matt rife talks one on one, it always feels like matt and the person he's talking to are just old friends catching up. he's so comfortable around people, it suits him and his personality very well
  • @danielr3127
Matt's unapologetic attitude towards cancel culture and ability to articulate himself are true signs of a quality comedian.

"If you just turn around, there is an entire planet behind you." So simple, but so deep.
  • Kudos for not apologizing. The day comedians can't tell a joke about a particular issue (which, by the way, we all do every damn day), is the day comedians stop trying to make us laugh. What a sad day that would be. Keep doing what you're doing. Real people love you man!
And thank you Dr. Peterson for being real!

This collab is something different, Matt is like a Jordan's kid just listening and learning from him, and Jordan listening to his kid about his world. So special

Im disabled in a wheelchair and i have no problem with disabled jokes or almost any joke. I think everyone needs to laugh at themselves and the crazy ride we're on called life. Laughter is the best medicine after all!
  • @jakesatcher8629
He even spelled it out in the special, "you can't cancel me, I'm not your gym membership".
  • @gumpster66
"Making light of a very dark serious thing", is also a form of a coping mechanism. While serving with the US Army for 7 years, we all joked about the most horrific things, we had to. Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to function properly. Great vid. Thanks guys. Matt, I'm 58 and I find your humor hilarious. :) :) :) face-green-smilingface-blue-smiling

A joke is to ridicule the situation, not the person. You are GRANDE.

“I wasn’t fishing for compliments, but I appreciate the fact they emerged”
You got to love Dr. Peterson
  • @sandrea26France
This is the oddest, most beautiful exchange. These two together are something I wouldn't have guested I'd enjoy as much as I did.
  • @christie.grefff
I love Matt Rifes humor and I'm a woman and laughed at that same joke he got "cancelled" over. I don't blame him for not apologizing and commend him for that as a comedian. He's such a smart comedian and he's got a huge future ahead of him. ❤
  • This is how 2 generations should interact.
Being human and being real, the only filter is respect and tolerence.

No one walking on eggshells, no one blaming each other. Refreshing
  • "I wasn't fishing for compliments but I do appreciate the fact that they emerged" 😂😂 Gotta love how JP expresses himself.
  • This interview felt so organic. Just two guys getting to know each other, and fully engaged. Great job, Jordan!
  • I can relate with Matt about his grandpa. My grandpa was my best friend too, and he battled several forms of cancer for nearly 20 years. I’m so blessed and honored to have done his hospice care, even though it broke me. I wouldn’t change it for the world. That was the worst pain Ive ever felt in my entire life. For me, comedy is a form of healing and is necessary for my mental well being.
