Using black to really make your colours sing

Published 2024-04-04
In today's video, I want to chat about something that's near and dear to every artist's heart: the so-called "rules" of creating art. I'm a firm believer that there are no hard and fast rules in art. In fact, whenever I come across one, I make it my mission to break it and see where it takes me.

One rule that often gets thrown around is about the color black so today I want to share 3 really cool ways that I personally use black to make my colors sing. So hit play, join me on this artistic journey, and don't forget to share your thoughts with me afterwards! Let's dive in and unleash our creativity together. 🎨✨

Oh my gosh, exactly what I needed to see and hear right now! I'm a (self-teaching) beginner and love the olive greens, golds and bronzey tones, which always come out looking too bright and unnatural for me even when I mix them. I'm headed straight to my sketchbook after watching this, and for sure getting my black out! Thanks so much, Louise.

🤩Louise Fletcher, you make me feel happy each time I am listening to you or reading your posts. Thank you!
  • Wow! I've been told by so many fellow artists not to use black. This is truly a game changer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm self taught except for watching your incredible videos - thank you!!

your enthusiasm always convinces me. The afternoon has turned dreary so what could be more fun than mixing greens?!

I used black to make some collages sing and then mixed the most amazing green. I can remember my art teacher saying black was not allowed and she sat me down to paint a black singer sewing machine. It was a good exercise but I love black too.

I always used a black board when making interior design presentations to clients, because everything looked so much better.

You are right on the mark, my kind lady! I love black, but their are two blacks, cold and warm, but black is our friend! This is such a wonderful video, damn you have made me smile again! You are a hero of mine!
  • Thanks Louise. Great video as usual. You explain things so well. Cheers.

Your first combination of the fluorescent orange looked like lava! So many complimentary colors by simply adding black/white👍😃
  • Fascinating, thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom, Louise.
