I noticed you loosened your backing plate and moved your 3 Jaw chuck around. This chuck should actually be mounted on a machined boss so you can’t tap it around. If you have a 4 Jaw independent chuck don’t be afraid to use it. If you don’t have one you should try and find one. Just true up your 3 jaw and leave it that way.

How are you grounding the spindle to avoid damage to the bearings when welding on the lathe?
