Today we’re literally giving you three chords and the truth with a song that has left an indelible mark on rock history… Wild Thing by the TROGGS... Written and recorded under the gun, The songwriter Chip Taylor had to write the song and record a demo in just a few hours to hit a deadline. Otherwise, he might miss his date with destiny. After he finished recording it. it was so corny he fell on the floor laughing! He had written the song as a joke as a code word for Sex. Turns out, the song completely flopped the first time around. And then feeling embarrassed by the track’s sexual undertones, this writer tried to hide it from his publisher. But someone found it and it was picked up by today’s famous group, The Troggs. Piggybacking on someone else’s recording session, the band laid it down in something like 20 minutes. But as fast as it took to record, this song was no flash in the pan. The song was all a big joke and it made its writer so rich he was gambling 10 grand a day in Vegas… The story is up next on Professor of Rock.

Declared by many to be the “first British punk band”, today’s featured musicians gave us a surefire classic… and the original writer laughed the entire time he wrote it. thinking it was all a huge joke. Little did he know that Joke would bring in a lot of money. It’s the Troggs with Wild Thing. The Troggs, short for Troglodytes, aka “cave men” were a garage rock band that originated in Andover, England. In 1964 Reginald Maurice Ball, later famously known as Reg Presley, was working as a bricklayer while at the same time playing in the first lineup of The Troggs… When that formation disbanded, Reg and drummer Ronnie Bond joined up with guitarist Chris Britton and bassist Pete Staples… members of a rival Andover band named Ten Feet Five.

By 1965, Reg took on lead vocalist duties, and the guys were soon discovered by up-and-coming producer Larry Page. Page had struck gold with one of the most influential rock bands of the 60s, first called the Ravens and later renamed the Kinks. These guys scored big time with their breakout #1 UK hit You Really Got Me. Following this burst of success, Larry Page signed the Troggs and in 1966, the band recorded a one-off single for CBS Records called ‘Lost Girl’. It wasn’t a hit.

However, their next single would be. Famously becoming an essential entry into the story of rock and roll. The song was of course Wild Thing! Although popularized by the Troggs, Wild Thing wasn’t actually written by the band. Rather it originated with a songwriter named Chip Taylor. Throughout his career, Taylor was a prolific writer, composing songs for Willie Nelson, the Hollies, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin, and Jackie DeShannon. Notably one of his biggest hits was Angel Of

Poll: What is your pick for the CATCHIEST SONG of all time? One you HAVE TO SING ALONG to?

Chip Taylor was born James Voight, youngest of 3 brothers. The oldest brother Barry is a volcanologist who predicted the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens. The middle brother is actor Jon Voight making Chip the uncle of Angelina Jolie, quite the successful family.

I won my high school talent show with Wild Thing. Just me and my guitar, standing ovation. My first and only.

Hi Professor of Rock, my parents were brought together by a Troggs song. The song was I Can't Control Myself, which was banned on the radio here in Australia. So as dad was invited to a party in 1966. He mentioned to the party organiser, Betty, "Do you have the banned Troggs song?" Which she replied, "Yes, I do!" The conversation that followed led to them getting to know each other, and finally going out. And sometime later married. I am their first son.

Oh my GOD ! I’m 70, ride a mobility scooter, and play that song LOUD on my little stereo when I’m going shopping! Also “ Born to be wild”! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love Grandma Debbie
  • It's the tempo, the pacing and pauses in "Wild Thing" that makes it so darn powerful.
  • In April 1966, when 'Wild Thing' was released, we used to dance to it and the B side 'From Home' at the local church youth club. It was played more than any other record for weeks. They were one of my favourite bands. Little did I know twelve years later, I would be their manager and produce a record with them at the famous Olympic Studios in London. Talking with Reg, I can confirm all the information and facts you mentioned are extremely accurate. My memories of Reg (and Ronnie) are something I will always cherish.
  • The guy that wrote "Angel of the morning" also wrote "Wild thing". That blows my mind.🤯

Wild Thang is a legend in our home. Originally we adopted a stray kitten and named it Figaro after the sweet cat in Pinocchio, after a short time we knew his personality was not suited to that name at ALL. Within a few months he became Wild Thang. When I called him, it was if I were singing it. WILD THANG. It stuck. My son was around 5 when he were in the grocery store and the song played. His eyes lit up and he said "There is a song about my cat! " Indeed son. That is what the song is all about. Being feral.

The ocarina was featured on the Hugo Montenegro hit, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. The instrument was played by my great uncle, United Artists session musician, Art Smith, who usually specialized in woodwinds, but also enjoyed specialty and novelty instruments.

The scene when Sheen came into the game against the Yankees and the crowd roared "Wild Thing" while he walked to the mound from the bullpen is one of the great moments in all cinema.

My Dad worked with Reg for Thomas King and sons, builders. He was there the day Reg famously dropped his tools and walked offsite after hearing the song on the radio. Later I interviewed Reg for local radio. I found him a very genuine and humble man, not a wild thing !
  • @Bluswede
Best performance of "Wild Thing"? Animal, chained to the drum kit, on the Muppet Show! OK-OK!!...I won't die on that hill...but it sure was memorable!
  • @shanerogers7198
Thank you. I just got off work. Bad day, understatement. Angry at the world. And video popped up. I was immediately transported back to the five year old, rocking and screaming at the top of my lungs, “Wild thing.” You don’t know how much I needed that, thank you.
  • @MarkSmith-th1ij
Wild Thing is like Louie Louie it has developed a life of its own. It truly is a great garage rock classic. How many songs immediately bring a smile to your face when you hear those first chords. Always on my party playlists. By the way Chip Taylor is Jon Vought's brother and Angelina Jolie's uncle!! Kind of wild by itself!!
  • @DMHltd
I grew up with Wild Thing, Hang on Sloopy, etc. 1963-current. The surprising thing I get out of this channel aside from the stories are the instruments I had no idea that were used. I just took their sound as part of the songs I loved. Not to mention the work and expertise it took to write and play them.
  • "Wild Thing" was one of the first songs my son learned when he started taking guitar lessons. Played it for a talent show at our church. One of the leaders of our congregation was so surprised to hear this 11-year old kid rocking the song he fell out of his chair laughing.
  • I recall hearing Wild Thing playing on everyone’s transistor radio on the beach in the summer. Awesome classic! Thanks for the background info, Professor!❤
  • @leannmiller7153
Love the back story Professor! I’m 70 years old and still have my 45 rpm single❤️‍🔥

The Goodies comedy glam rock verion of Wild Thing from 1975 brought the song to a whole new audience, especially in Australia since the show it was in was on constant repeat throughout the 80s!
