How I Keep My Plants from Floating Away

I really like floating plants because they just get rid of all the algae in my tanks, BUT it’s annoying when the filter pushes them down, my other plants get shaded out, and how they stick to my arms when I do water changes. I originally made a DIY circle out of airline tubing to keep them in place, but recently upgraded to this floating plant corral: www.etsy.com/shop/SurrealAqua

I really like the design, I've always thought airline tubing looks like detritus plastic.

YES !! A LIFESAVER !!! I was looking for this the other time when someone had posted pictures in a fish group but couldn't find a link to purchase it. Thanks a lot Irene !!
  • The trick for a nice, stable airline ring is to use the hot part of the hot glue gun to widen one end so you can put the other end into it. Make sure to add a bit of hot glue into the wider end to keep the other end in place. Keeps its shape, floats well, and a nice clean look without a weird glob of glue on the outside. I place floating plants around the rings so the ring stays in place. I can totally see the appeal of the suction cup mounts though, if you want plants inside the rings instead.
  • That looks great! My local pet store told me I couldn't fit more than 1 plant in a 5 gallon fishtank and I was quite bummed

I used your airline tubing idea as inspiration for my “fence” that I made from straws! 😂. Thanks for the Etsy link now that I see what a difference it makes I don’t mind investing in something better!!!

Just got these in the mail today after watching your video. For me, they are soo much better than airlines, thanks for posting!

Cool product, but I don't understand why people think a little algae growth looks worse than having a big plastic ring, a suction cup, and that mount right in the center of your tank.

well you just answered my search, I had a tons of algae on my stone! i need this so much

I got a similar setup, except it’s magnets that you place inside and outside, with the inner magnet attached to a rod through which you thread the airline tube circle.
  • Thank you! I have floating plants that go crazy everywhere. My fish are like where’s my food…
