3:28 If you’re treating your dehydration or trying to hydrate yourself, choose these options

Is Gatorade or Powerade better for dehydration? My answer: neither! Use something better. First I’ll explain the differences between 12-ounce bottles of these two products.

They each contain 21 grams of sugar. One has sucrose and one high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). You’re probably thinking that HFCS is worse but the fact that they don’t tell you where the sugar comes from means it’s probably GMO beet sugar instead of sugar cane. It probably has residue of glyphosate. High fructose corn syrup also does because the corn is GMO.

Sucrose is roughly half and half glucose and fructose. HFCS, interestingly, has less fructose than sucrose does. Fructose is more likely than glucose to create insulin resistance because it overloads the liver. Powerade has dextrose and modified food starch, which is another name for monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer.

Both of these products contain only two electrolytes: potassium and sodium. But they contain only a fraction of the amount of the 4,700 mg of potassium your body needs each day. Powerade contains synthetic versions of B6, B3, and B12 vitamins. Gatorade has none.

Which one is worse? They both are! They’re basically sugar water. If you’re trying to treat your dehydration or hydrate yourself, choose something with all the electrolytes and without all the sugars and hidden sugars.

Sometimes you’ll hear that you need to replace the sugar your body uses from its glycogen reserve during exercise. The problem is if you tap your glycogen reserve you aren’t tapping into your fat reserve, which is probably why you’re exercising in the first place. Too much sugar causes you to get low blood sugar, feel tired, and have worse endurance - not what you want!

For more information about electrolytes check out the video I linked below. And be sure to treat your dehydration with something better than Gatorade or Powerade.

  • Gotorade is meant for high intensity training/sports. We need to replenish the sugar and potassium and sodium.

I wish my teachers were like you more soothing and easy to understand great vid doc

Need to do power aid zero vs Gatorade zero which a lot of people on keto consume. No one one keto drink the regular versions.

Dr Berg is really cool. Thats why I listen to him. Great advice doc! It's really cool that I started watching you and found out one of my friends watches your videos as well and buys your products too.

If your goal is sports PERFORMANCE and not fat loss, you need sugar. Real athletes need sugar, your typical recreational fitness bunny doesn't.

Happy that I just purchased your electrolyte powder. Was stressing seriously doing yard work. Did some ACV + water and what a power- house. Got the electrolyte powder in mail Saturday it really is affective - easy and refreshing. Has become my go to drink. I feel so 😎 drinking it. Okay I’m a senior-senior but wow. 👍

Work construction in the hot sun for a handful of years plus sports all my life. Without even looking at the labels I know gatorade works better. When you’re drinking minimum 6 sport drinks and 6 waters everyday to stay hydrated you can tell. I’ve tried multiple times with swapping out gatorade with powerade and you can tell in how you feel. Also have done just water and just sports drinks... that doesn’t work either. You need a 1:1 ratio of both to be hydrated and keep your energy up. (Im talking about sweating literally for 10 hours, drenched in sweat all day)

Powerade really helps me at the gym. I do relatively heavy workouts and live in a warm part of the world. If you are working out for an hour with weights and you are a sweater than take some Powerade or Gatorade, but water it down at the drink fountain. That is what I do. Stops you getting a dry mouth from dehydration and will see another 15 or so minutes on workout. I also have a glass of beet juice an hour or so before gym.

BODYARMOR is the BEST sports drink now. It uses coconut water, lots of potassium, almost no salt, and the Lyte version uses stevia for sweetener. It has much more vitamins than these two old drinks.

Everytime someone mentions Vitamin water/Energy drink/Sports drink I correct them with colored sugar water.

I think this video deserves a remake. Sugars aren't just used for energy they also help brain function. When you've drained all your glucose your brain doesn't function at its best. Im here because I play sports and have realized this and am looking for the better option between these two. Also, it seems powerade has updated their recipe. The ingredients and amounts are different than what I am seeing today on powerade.

Been doing keto for about 3yrs now. Down 100lbs, work out regularly and recreational softball. Powerade Zero is my go to drink, it never slowed down my progress. I don't think anyone doing Keto, even a beginner, would think regular Powerade or Gatorade was Keto friendly..both products were too sweet for me even before I started Keto..Just my 2 cents..
  • @SKC640
What powerade were you getting the ingredients from? While watching I decided to check the list on my Powerade bottles and the two flavors I had both used corn syrup for the sugar. Maybe since this video came out they switched it. It's definitely a good idea to check them now to see what else has been changed
  • @bsaryder
Great Doc! Can you please do the zero calorie products Powerade Zero vs. Gatorade G2? Thx!
  • @Ozmni11
Thank you for this video!! I often wondered which was better. My mom who is 80 years old and has hypertension and is diabetic wants to drink these for leg cramps. I don't want her to drink them because of the sugar content but there is no stopping her. I bought her mineral drops to add to her water in place of these drinks but she keeps running back to the drinks. Anyway, THANK YOU AGAIN. You help out so many people with your videos!
  • @saturdaycity
What do you recommend for a recreational marathon runner, for a typical 5 km - 20 km training run? A water + lemon juiced by oneself? Does that cover the need for electrolytes? Thank you so much for answering!
  • @davebon5085
Hospitals and medicine a prescription makers don't make any money if you're healthy... Remember that Kids
  • You can make your own electrolyte drink with water lemon juice apple cider vinegar and some Celtic Sea salt which is really good for the summer if you're outside and you're perspiring a lot you need to replace all your electrolytes.
