BIG BOY No. #4014
From Union Pacific’s web page
“BIG BOY No. 4014 -Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo.
There are seven Big Boys on public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in St. Louis, Missouri; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941. The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service. Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013, and relocated it back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process. It returned to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion.

I think the Union Pacific 4014 is majestic and shiny he is a king of the rails and I am very happy that he is pulling a train by himself he can pull 650 freight cars
  • @519CZRacer
Hope this video will reduce the amount of ignorant postings stating “The diesel is doing all the real work”.
  • @Hyce777
Great captures, mate. You love to see it.
  • @jcalohio
How beautiful this engine looks. UP loves its locomotives.
  • Thank you for getting the video of the 4014 and putting it online. Great to see 4014 out on a train without a diesel on the train.

What needs to happen at some time in near future is to see Big Boy tour the first 13 colonies.
  • It allomst feels like when big boy was shuting cars, is allmost like how it was in the steam era back in the 1930s and the 1940s

Now with 4014 containing its own PTC systems in the current 3985 tender, I can imagine the tender swap requiring the actual 4014 tender to be equipped with the same. Nice that they keep making great progress though.
  • Imagine the possibilities if this little experiment goes better than expected. The golden age of steam would be reborn!!!!

I knelt down to get out of your picture at 9:14, but you had to zoom out too soon.

Nice to actually it "chug" hard.
  • very Tastefully done by UP, Love it. This is the equivalent of putting bluetooth/lane keep assist/gps etc into a ford model T.
  • This locomotive was doing all the work as they all did long before there was any diesels at all .
