Ultra-runner near the end of a 50-mile excursion attacked by a bear in Yosemite Valley

Jon-Kyle Mohr, a runner from June Lake, collided with a black bear in Yosemite Valley when he was finishing a 50-mile run on July 7. While hundreds of black bears live in Yosemite Park, attacks — or accidental collisions — are rare. More recently, bears have become more active in Yosemite Valley, due to a ripening crop of natural raspberries, according to the National Park Service.

    The victim is lucky it was a black bear and not a brown (grizzly) bear. Had it been a griz, this story likely would have ended very differently...

    ..so now the bear is out on parole and has to wear an ankle er.. neck bracelet.

    Yeah, it's too bad but the bear will most likely be euthanized after this. All because some human did not secure their trash in a proper way, and the runner was mistaken by the bear as an opponent who was getting in the way of a meal. Maybe wildlife should be the first consideration when someone decides to go for a 50 mile run through an area known for bears and other wild animals?
