A native plant garden, like any other garden, requires maintenance to ensure that pesky invasives and unwanted exotic plants do not detract from its aesthetic and ecological purposes. There are different maintenance tasks for a native garden than there are for a traditional garden filled with rose bushes and azaleas.

In this webinar recorded for ReWild Long Island, Anthony Marinello, a permaculture and rewilding expert, teaches the basic principles of native garden maintenance for new and experienced rewilders alike. He walks us through the seasonal calendar and discusses the do’s and don’ts of caring for native plants, along with tips and tricks for weeding out unwanted invaders.

Anthony founded Dropseed Native Landscapes to give Long Islanders the ability to transform their piece of the island into a native plant oasis to sustain both humans and wildlife alike

    1. We say that native plants adapt and do the best in our area relative to desease , pest and moisture requirements…..but if a non native becomes invasive, doesn’t that mean it is also adaptive to desease, pests and the available moisture and is thriving which is why we are told to use a native . It seems like if we plant a non native and it thrives. We are told to use a native so it has natural limits…and if we plant non native and it Doesn’t thrive, then we are told we should have used a native so it would have thrived and self propagated
