Learn how to make a roller coaster in Minecraft with this Minecraft tutorial.

Alright, let's take a look at a roller coaster I've built. Your mine cart goes up here, falls down this drop, heads up into a nice cavern, out and down here, and then hits this switch and heads into a station. Here I have a willing participant to show it off in action. Press this button to get him started and up he goes.

Now, he'll hit this detector rail, switch these rails around and that will bring him back into the station here. Okay, let's go over how you can build one of these. First thing you're going to do is craft your items. You'll need plenty of rails. Place iron like so and a stick in the middle. You get 16 rails per recipe. You're going to need a bunch, so hopefully you've been mining that iron. You'll also need plenty of powered rails. So, place your gold like so, red stone on the bottom, and a stick in the middle. You only get six per recipe, so make sure you have plenty of gold. You'll also need a button, so place two stones like so. You'll also need some red stone torches. They're like regular torches but with red stone on top. You're also going to need some detector rails, that you'll need a pressure plate which you make with two stones like so. Pull that down. Then, build a detector rail by laying iron out like so, with red stone on the bottom and a pressure plate in the middle. You get six detector rails per recipe. Finally, you'll need to build a mine cart.

I've cleared a nice space here where I can build my roller coaster. I'm going to start by building my spiral up. I'm going to place four blocks in a row, like so. Then I'm going to raise one level. That's my one, then two, three, four. Then raise another level, one, two, three, four. Then up one, two, three, four. Remember to hold shift while you're doing this, so you don't fall down and just keep going up until you're as high as you want your roller coaster to be. Now I'm going to build out a way. That's the direction my drop will be.

I can actually start laying my tracks now. I'm going to want to use powered rails, but I can't put them at a turn. Powered rails don't have the capacity to turn, so I'm going to place a regular rail here and a powered rail below it. I'm going to use a lot of powered rails, because, for one, I'm gaining a lot of elevation but also because carts without people in them move more slowly and I don't want them to get stuck somewhere on the roller coaster. Just keep doing this, placing a powered rail at every rise in elevation, using cleanup anywhere you might have misplaced a block.

Now, I can actually use this to head up all the way to the top. Just pull out my mine cart, place it on these tracks, give it a push, and right click to get in. This should be enough power to get me all the way up.

This is the direction my drop will be. Instead of building my drop from the top down, I'm going to build from the bottom up. I also need to power this last rail. It was going a little slowly there at the end. So, to build up, I need to know just how high up I am right now. Just count down, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three. So, I know I need to be around twenty-three blocks away from this drop before I start building up. So, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one. That's pretty good. I'll start here, just building one up and one over like a series of steps, all the way up.

There we go. I've got my first drop. Build my rails and place them along these blocks and they'll automatically turn into a ramp. Don't be stingy with the powered rails. You will need them to get your cart around this track when you're not in it. Now it's getting kind of late out, I'm going to try and rush this last bit here. So, you can see it's already coming along quite a bit. I need to take a break now and come back to this in the morning.

All right, here we go. Continue this track all the way around placing powered rails every so often. I like to use a cornered trick with powered rails. Put one red stone torch there and power them all. There we go. The roller coaster part is actually already done. I can get in and go for a ride.

All right, pretty great, just right click to get off your cart and make sure it can make it all the way around the track by itself with you not in it. It will go more slowly and, if there aren't enough powered rails, it will

I haven’t made a rollercoaster on Minecraft in around 15 years, today I used your video to re-teach myself and to show my nine year old - and she made her own on the switch. Thank you 😊

Amazing video. Your voice is very relaxing, your explanations are very simple, and it's easy to follow. This is my first time building a roller coaster. I hope it'll be as cool as the one shown in the video! Thanks HowcastGaming! :D

I love you putting the dog as a helper. it really helped to see a demonstration.

Oh my God, THANK YOU!! The detector rail part was pretty hard to nail at first, because it was malfunctioning, but when I put a second redstone torch behind the first, it changed directions. When I destroyed the second, it stayed that way, so all I had to do, was layout the inverter. Thanks, great video!!
