From a CNA that actually uses these: That isn't an toothbrush, it's to moisten a person's mouth that is unable to drink thin water without risk of asphyxiation. I could not imagine the unpleasant feeling of those sponge things in my teeth, literal hell to me

It’s used to moisten the mouth or to keep the mouth a coma patient clean so they don’t get a lot of build up in their mouth. It isn’t meant to keep your teeth sparkling it’s just meant to prevent infection from a dirty mouth. They use those instead of regular toothbrushes on mainly just coma patients, mostly everyone else gets a regular toothbrush.
