An increasingly tetchy battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in the closing laps of F1's Austrian Grand Prix eventually resulted in the two friends colliding, costing both a shot at victory at the Red Bull Ring.
Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw take a look at the fallout from the incident, including how the drivers' views differed, a hard-hitting opinion from McLaren team boss Andrea Stella, plus what it's likely to mean for how Verstappen and Norris race each other in the future, and their off-track friendship.

  • I think Peter Windsor gave a good explanation of what happened there was more than enough space for Lando. Sainz did the same to max and max slowed and avoided contact and overtook max on the over under. Lando is diving like a rookie
  • People have always complained that Norris is not aggressive enough to be a world champion, and finally when he shows some aggressivness, people complain that his wheel to wheel combat is bad, he is too impatient etc. Come on people, pick up your poison 🤷‍♂️.

"Max didn't like Lando making these huge lunges up the inside"... man, that's so fucking rich XD

Friendships and teammates only last when there’s a clear 1 and 2
  • Perez being 17 seconds behind Max who had a 10second penalty and a pit stop… that second seat is a waste
  • Norris his comment is strange. If you immediately say their friendship is at stake because of an incident in the race then you are really frustrated. Max was smart by saying of course we wil talk it out but he first has to watch back the replay. It is also short sighted because of what happened before the incident. First Lando dive bombs, goes off track, also forces Max off track and then the incident happens. Lando was also not really correct in the duel. Then looking back at the duels between Max and Lewis. Max was then blamed for dive bombing, got cut by Lewis in similar ways. Back then it was Max his fault by the British media and fans. Now Lando does this to Max and now it still is Max his fault. In my opinion this is being blown up again by Lando his emotional reaction and the British media and fans.
  • Love how after all that he still finished 17 seconds ahead of Checo
  • "Can their friendship survive that". This is a competitive sport. This is what you wanna talk about ?
  • If this is going to be like watching two gamer mates fall-out over who wins and who doesn’t - I do think Max is more mentally resilient to be able to handle it in all honesty. He seems to have a detachment from the track that Norris doesn’t have - even though they both can become extremely animated and emotional when it’s not going well

It's situations like this that Red Bull want Perez to be where Russel was and pick up the pieces, yet Perez got beaten and overtaken by a Haas, this guy won't be in Red Bull next year if he keeps this up, that new contract will be ripped to shreds.
  • Pretty clear it was two drivers continuously escalating being more aggressive and aggressive lap by lap
  • @kingjulian420
Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton are about to have a great bonding experience
  • Oooooh last week, didn't LN say that MV had enough space when he pushed him on to the grass at the start of the Spanish GP.
  • The complaints over the racing finally being close is nuts. Penalty is fine, excited to see them race close through the rest of the season

This incident reminds me of the Schumacher days when he was dominating races. In those days he always crashed into other drivers who were about to beat him.
  • @jusbus777
Hold on! Verstappen is criticizing dive bombing? Verstappen! This must be a joke. Verstappen!
  • Ricciardo and Verstappen had many incidents (quite famously) and they, too, have said their friendship survived in part due to Ricciardo leaving Red Bull.
