Based on my testing with the iPhone 14 Pro it doesn't seem 3rd party repair is viable on this device, despite Apples introduction of the "Self Service Repair" program this year.

I tried pointing this out for a decade..... nobody cares. I don't mean this as an insult to you. Or your content. Or to our industry. It's sad. but nobody cares. Thank you for your continued work & dedication to informing users just how little freedom they have left.
  • When Apple removes charger and headphones in their package because "to avoid environment impact in the world" but then make their iPhones unfixable which harms the environment if they have been bricked by repairs. Apple gets away for the things they did bad.

Remember when you could easily pop the back off of a phone and replace the battery if you needed to? Superior design.
  • No headphone jack, no charger, no SIM tray, no noise cancellation, no touch ID, but more expensive than all the other models. Buying an iPhone is like buying a bathing suit, the less you get, the more you pay.

I’m a “Certified Apple Technician” at Best Buy but I learn more about repair in your videos than my non existent training LOL

I feel like one of the best things they could do for the environment would be to not make people feel the need to upgrade each year.

I was a real Apple fanboy back in the 80s and 90s, from pre OS6 days right up to OSX, but I switched away from their products right after the introduction of OS10.2. I haven't purchased a single Apple product since, and that includes iPhones, iPads, and all the rest. After seeing this, I remain confident that my decision was a good one for me. I like to think that the customer should always come first, and being able to repair your own gear is something I consider a critically important feature, especially when the replacement costs are so high.

What a legend. Thank you so much for the straightforward information.
  • Can confirm I am now having the same issue with the cameras, going to try downgrading to IOS 16.0 and see what happens. Amazing video Hugh!
  • "I might have spent over $3,000 on these phones, but I feel like they're not even mine." Wow. Profound. Great job, Apple.

Thank you so much for this video!
  • Just had the back glass on my wife's old iPhone 12 Pro Max replaced the other week. Some guy at the mall did it in a kiosk in the mall for like $100 lol. Took him like 30 minutes too! I was blown away. He removed the glass like it was the easiest thing in the world.

Apple's enduring commitment to being petty and facetious has given me so much entertainment throughout the years. From fake environmentalism, to booby trapped updates, to hanging on to the lightning port, to this shit. 🏆

The iPhone not recognizing ITS OWN CAMERA is just something else

Very super content bro thanks for you effort for this video 🙏

This is nutty. It makes me miss the Samsung Note 2. I kept that thing going for about 6 years - I replaced the charging port, power button, vibration motor, the SIM card/Micro SD card board, and the battery a couple times - all without having to solder anything. It was the most repair-friendly device I have ever had. Really great design.

9:37 I think it's obvious here that during the install of the OS/Update it burns in the ID of the camera into a peripheral device registry and the reason you loose functionality when swapping is because the ID's don't match what's in the registry. So, when swapping hardware and OS Update/reinstall is needed to update the approve device registry which it thankfully seems is created by using the currently attached devices as the base when installing or updating the OS.

Well done for documenting what Apple are doing and holding them to account for these scummy business practices.
