I had no idea people hated on Garp, I think he's an amazingly written character

Oda actually portrays the generational gap between the Monkey D. family so well. Garp being the conservative grandad who even though possesses some black & white world views he still has a good heart, Dragon who, whilst being a revolutionary, approaches it in a very methodical fashion and only hates the celestial dragons and not the kings who stand below them and then lastly Luffy being Gen Z doing whatever the hell he wants.
  • Garp is honestly, that one pillar of the marines that still can give bright eyed impressionable youths (like Koby) that idealistic "Hero" dream that inspired them to join the Marines in the first place without having the concept be completely swallowed by the WG's corruption.
  • I really wonder how Luffy feels about Garp. Their last interaction was the punch at Marineford, which was immediately followed by the death of Luffy's brother at the hands of the Marines—with Garp present. In the 10+ years since Marineford we haven't had even a panel of Luffy thinking about or mentioning Garp. We genuinely do not know how Luffy feels about Garp or his dilemma. It'd be interesting to see how he feels about him and how they will interact if they ever see each other again

Morj is so good at being engaging when explaining literary devices such as themes and characters. This video reminded me of why I am subscribed to this channel.

As a Japanese reader, I'm kinda shocked to know that there were people in the world that hated Garp for not saving Ace. like, are they even reading the story? If you're really reading the story, I'm pretty sure it was clear why he couldn't save Ace, since Oda literally drew the whole struggle that he had. These complex scenes make the character more interesting and is what made me love him.
  • The picture of Garp doesn’t only indicate his personality mirrors Luffy; young Garp carrying the rod as a child while on a tiger also suggests his upbringing was similar to that of Luffy’s too. We know Luffy, Ace, and Sabo used to all carry a similar rod to the one Garp has on their adventures, and part of Luffy’s trials as a child was the struggle to survive and overcome the wilderness.
  • Garp is a major reason why Marineford is so good. The internal conflict he has is maybe the best in the series
  • I really love how both Garp and Luffy both dislike the title of “hero” Luffy dislikes it because he doesn’t want the responsibility, and Garp dislikes it because he doesn’t feel like he deserves the responsibility. It’s such a good parallel.

Garp is one of the best written characters in the series. It’s a shame that many ignore his moral dilemma in marineford or straight up blame him for Ace’s death.
  • This is beautiful. The scene of Garp sobbing on the execution platform made me almost tear up, because this is the moment we see his emotional struggle fully. An excellent, beautiful video

One thing people often overlook is that Garp is friends with and mentored countless marines over the span of decades, the marines at Marineford were his nakama, so while Ace was family, Ace's nakama were attacking his, which only added to his inner turmoil. I think a lot of people shift the blame on Garp, but Ace's stubborness lead to his demise, because he underestimated Blackbeard.

Another thing that a lot of readers don't realize is what Garp himself means to the people of the One Piece world. He is THE hero. He is straight up the All Might of their world. Even disregarding the outcome of the war, just people seeing Garp turn traitor would have a tremendous negative effect.
  • I think the reason Garp let Ace be saved was specifically cause it was his grandson trying to save him. Had someone else like whitebeard or Marco been the one to make it there, he would have not let himself get punched. He was probably thinking how could he stop luffy when he is putting his whole life into saving his brother. Also that scene with Garp and dadan still gets me every time I watch it. 😢

I’m really glad this video came out bc some ppl really give Garp a lot of crap for not helping Ace but they honestly fail to understand Dude had his important responsibilities as a officer of true Peace and justice and If the public saw him as helping a pirate, then the citizens wouldn’t know who to turn to when it came to crime and bloodthirsty pirates
  • The problem with Garp is that many readers are quite simply too young to understand his perspective. Which is not a diss, his dilemmas are things adults encounter in later life. For example, you can't just tell a father or mother who is working a low paid job to quit it and open a business. They have a responsibility for their families. So, they need to make difficult decisions which upon a superficial glance seem stupid. Naturally most teens and young adults won't be able to relate to such a perspective. Garp is one of the parental figures of the show and those in my opinion are notoriously misunderstood. In fact, here's a hot take: The reason so many people love Whitebeard is because we all can relate to having (or at worst wanting) a good loving father. Extremely few people talk about his perspective of wanting to be the parent, growing your own family, etc. It's always the perspective of wanting to have a parent like him. The one and only person I ever saw relating to his role as a parent was Merphy Napier who sees herself as a similar sort of mother figure for her friends (according to herself). At least among the typical well known One Piece youtubers.
  • I honestly think if Ace would have broke down and just asked his Grandpa to help him, then Garp would have in a heartbeat, regardless of the consequences. He did care greatly for his family, and the decision weighed on him so heavily that I think it wouldn’t have taken much to tip him in that direction.
  • Garp is such an amazing character. I would give anything for Oda to make a prequel series following his story after OP is finished.
  • Not sure how much it plays into it. But it's worth noting that in the Uta backstory, Luffy was seen to be very much against pirates before meeting Shanks.
