I located arcing insulator with a 220 MHz. non FM receiver with a simple beam. Took a long time to get it fixed. They AES only had an ultrasonic dish to pinpoint with. You can also use a digital camera that is made sensitive to UV to see arcing day or night. IR did not show anything in my case. I think digital cameras have a UV filter added to them and apparently some people have been able to remove the UV filters from cameras. Otherwise a pro UV camera for spotting arcs is big money. The ultrasonic dish needs to be close but it has a very narrow beam compared to radio.

What frequency and mode were you using to monitor the noise?
