In "The Battle for Laikipia," director Daphne Matziaraki explains that climate change is the leading cause behind a generational fight between Indigineous cattle farmers and white landowners in Kenya. Matziaraki and producer Toni Kamau dropped by the IndieWire Studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox, to talk about the documentary film and the state of Kenya today.

    In Laikipia the story is more than 94 minute film. There is a lot to be told. Samburu getting into distinctions. We fought for existence but nobody cared. When we are finished the world will remember us.

    Too many people. Just look at the population of Kenya from, say, 1980 to present. Tripled! It's now beyond the carrying capacity for either cattle ranchers or the pastoralist way of life. Too many cattle -- especially goats, which are especially destructive. The problem would be acute --- with or without conservancies --- with or without climate change. Too many pastoralists and ranchers believing that the land is infinite and has infinite capacity. Similar issues all over the world. Laikipia is not especially unique.
