This tutorial takes a close look at the alto flute and where it sits within the common instruments of the flute family. The transposing nature of the Alto or 'G' flute is demonstrated as is the comparison in overall size and closed vs open nature of the keys on the alto flute compared to the common 'C' concert flute.

Reference is made to Ravel and Stravinsky's use of the alto flute in classical music and to Bud Shank's famous alto flute solo on California Dreamin' which was a smash hit for pop folk group the Mamas and the Pappas in the 1960s.

The tutorial ends with a beautifully mellow version of the Traditional Irish tune 'Londonderry Air', more commonly known as 'Danny Boy'. The arrangement showcases the alto flute in an unmistakable hauntingly rich low pitch melodic role.
