Watch my next video where I tried waking up at 5 am for 30 days which is already out on Nebula at nebula.tv/videos/zachhighley-i-tried-waking-up-at-….

Two months into quarantine my fitness was at an all-time low. I made the decision to run for 30 days. I have never run before. Here are the results of that experiment (my life will never be the same).

Who am I:

My name is Zach. I'm a second-year medical student in Philadelphia. I make videos about medical school, entrepreneurship, and other cool things. I love trying new things and often mess up. However, every time I screw up I usually learn something. Whatever I learn I post either on YouTube or my website 🌐 (zhighley.com/).

I write a weekly newsletter 💌 (zhighley.com/newsletter/) linking the best things I read, watched, and listened to that week. Not a single person has unsubscribed from this list (yet 😬).

best thing about running in the morning is that you feel good about yourself for the rest of the day and you end up making the right decisions throughout the day

Endorphin highs are addicting. Beating personal best times is addicting. Freeing your mind is addicting. Feeling better is addicting. First we build our habits, then they build us. Every human with a relatively functioning body can get stronger and better through running. Period.

For beginner runners; most runners are just glad to see you out there doing it. People get so caught up in what others think of their pace when the majority are just happy that people are discovering the joys of running. So don’t worry about your pace. Don’t feel embarrassed if your slower than others. Just keep getting out there and doing it. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you. For the most part, the running community are some of the nicest people I have come across!

I'll genuinely never forget my first runners high. I felt like i could run a marathon without being out of breath. I felt so happy and I couldn't stop smiling. I waved hi at random strangers, ran backwards, waved at random incoming cars. I was genuinely so happy to just exist. I don't think anything will ever come close to the happiness I felt from a runners high

"You're not finished if you stop, you're finished if you don't start again." Gold!

I’m 72, run 5 km every day, never time myself, don’t listen to music, very happy. Encourage you to for health, not statistic.
  • I was 120 kgs in 2020. I started running and I used to feel dead for running only 200 meters but I didn’t give up I ran I ran I kept running and after two years now my weight is 74. Today I run 10kms without stopping and I recently finished my first 10km marathon in 56 minutes. I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD DO SOMETHING WHICH SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE BUT I DID IT. The key is consistency and discipline, you’ll never know what your body can do unless until you start pushing yourse

I’m 4 weeks into running. I used to be a runner in my mid 20s and I felt so great! Post 2 kids and major weight gain has made it hard! Everything hurts and breathing is hard but I won’t quit! Thank you for this video. Let’s do this!

When I started running I was in my late 30s, could hardly run to the end of the street. Felt like i was going to be sick every run, heart was pounding, gasping for air and I was literally only jog walking.. I smoked, drank way too much alcohol, other vices too and my diet was terrible. I was absolutely determined to get fit enough to just run once around the block without stopping, then once around 2 blocks, then my whole neighbourhood, then my whole town.. Its been around 6 or 7 years since that first run and now I run 25km almost every single day and it's easy.. If you want to get fit never give up, it's absolutely horrid for the first few months but gradually your body will adapt and it will become normal and very very enjoyable. I gave up all my bad habits due to running, I took up some hobbies I probably wouldnt have without running.. Realistically running changed my life completely for the better, it's now the thing I love most and every day i cannot wait to get out and run

This was the last straw. I’m gonna start running tomorrow

Great job brother!!! That’s exactly how I started, “slow and steady wins the race” my drill sergeant used to say. I was the worst runner in basic training because that was literally the first time I ran in my life. I went from completing 2 miles in 26 minutes, to running a 5k in 16 minutes because I did what you did, I applied discipline and embraced the suck, now, I run 5:32 minute miles, have ran several half marathons and am currently training for a iron man in September. Stick with it, I’d love to continue to see your progress!!!

Running in the morning makes you ready for whatever is coming next throughout the day and doing it daily provides a little sense of achievement. When you're having a shitty day but you know you still had that run in your bag already, and then the day seems not so bad. So kudos to all the runners!!

Him: "My fitness was at an all-time low". Me: sees his chest and biceps Me: wants his all-time low fitness
  • "I haven't exercised and my physique was at an all time low" meanwhile he puts his arms up and veins are sticking out and he had good biceps.

I live in Philadelphia too and started during the pandemic to come out of depression. Nothing can ever beat the runners high to take you out of the ditch. I could relate so much with your story!
  • @jakehixon4073
Started running recently. It’s incredible how much it improves my mood fora few hours after or the rest of the day. No other exercise seems to do it as much.

My first run was brought on by an anxiety attack. It stopped the attack so I kept going. Then other runner's would wave or high five me and other's. I would say, I'm not a real runner. Then guy said yes you are stop saying that to yourself. Right before covid I broke my left ankle and couldn't run and still haven't run in a year. I start again this week. Thought I'd share my story for no reason. Congrats to you!

Okay but this is a cinematic masterpiece
  • You people have such good locations to run mannnn... Such clean and well planned cities! Like half of the energy is boosted just by seeing the morning atmosphere and scenic views!!
  • @bri9950
This makes my heart so happy! This is exactly how I fell in love with running years ago.
