Your Video Game Could Be Worth $12,000!? No!! Gare Bear

I swear the title isn't click bait - that's literally the title of the article I talk about -_- In this video, I talk about an article I read on CNN that talks about the current market of video games and how lucrative they can be. This kind of shit rubs me the wrong way so I figured - what the hell - let's make a video and talk about it!

I had the same reaction to that article when I saw it (and its groan-inducing headline). On the one hand, I LOVE that there are so many like-minded people into retro gaming and collecting, as that's a huge part of what makes this hobby so fun. But on the other hand, yeah, this kind of article being published absolutely contributes to our biggest frustrations in the hobby. Great topic to discuss, and I'm glad you made this video to address that feature story. :)

LMFAO. That was a hilarious rant. "Susan, put the vacuum down."
  • Definitely a frustrating trend that we're seeing more and more of these days. Makes it really hard for the rest of us. Great topic to discuss man; I agree with everything you said!

Great video bro, I'm not a collector but I understand 100% what you're getting at. What these people who go into collecting reading these types of articles don't understand is that only a FEW games will ever increase in value not all, they have to consider that when popularity of video game collecting starts declining so does the value of their investment.
  • @caprilaser3
Great vid man! Totally understand and agree with what your saying :)
  • @sharker102
Def luv your videos man plz keep them up&just got done watching this video  and def agree with you and just think these are roadblocks that takes fun out of collecting videogames with  all is happening but no matter what it's not gonna stop me from collecting and hope it doesn't stop you either

Great video man! I loved Joe Smoe, he seems like a great guy. XD When I first started collecting, I honestly thought I was gonna be one of those guys who stopped after a couple months. But I just never grew out of it, and im still in love with it today. I agree youtube channels dont help with the prices of retro games.
  • @DavetheNESGuy
Love the shirt! haha Oh, to go back in time and get all the rare games I once wanted.  Susan!
  • @pinopoly1
Your right. I used to go to sales last year and find tons of stuff. This year i seem to be running into people pricing their games too high and when i try to ask for a lower price they just say "why would i do that if i can take it to gamestop and get more" Ummm maybe because this is a garage sale and not a retail store your running.
  • @Graterstuuf
Totally agree with you about the yuppie reading the financial section. We have a chain of pawn shops in australia called 'cash converters' who charge above ebay prices for all retro games. Susan, we're sitting on a gold mine.
  • My girlfriend and I were just talking about this the other day. With all these articles coming out on retro games, I'm not surprised if some tv exec. makes a tv show talking about rarity and prices of retro video games and that will be horrible news for collectors because millions of people will know what their stuff is worth and terrible prices will keep flooding the market.

Great vid.Well as a gamer/collector I knew I had this passion for video games since I was a kid. And growing up my parents couldn't really afford to buy a video game console. So mostly went to a friends house or the nearest place that had video games which was a local 7-11 or convenience store.Later on,I remember my mom buying me a Commodore Vic-20/64 computer for my b-day it wasn't a console but I did play video games. And it wasn't til much later that I would I have my very own console which was a Sega Genesis.I believe during that time is when my love for video games was strong but there was a break in there with alot of real life issues. And when the PS One came out the spark was rekindled.I've pretty much stuck with the Playstation brand. There's a lot of nostalgia in wanting to go back and relive your childhood. It's something that I haven't done is go back and buy the consoles/games that I played when I was a kid.

As you mentioned ton of people have done similar videos. It's an ongoing issue though and is still interesting to hear your perspective. I agree with you though there are a ton of short term collectors and youtubers that hurt the hobby. I'm sure they have the best of intentions but when they realize how much these games cost and how much room they take, they bail out. It's not for everyone but it doesn't help the rest of us.
  • @GameFreak4Ever
I have to say you struck some very valid points about video games just in general.  Its important that people fully understand just how much video games mean.  Don't ruin the art by overcharging the market.  Good stuff1
  • @tjkitsune
Due to the rising prices of retro games, it's actually pushing me more towards the newer stuff.  I've been digging into the Vita and Xbox 360 stuff more these days.  You're spending about the same amount, and often times, you find some really good modern gems that are just as fun as the old games, or even find sequals to older games, like the Raiden series, or other modern shmups.
  • I feel how you do. It's even harder for me cause I rely on garage sales and flea markets to fund and grow the majority of my hobby. I sell for a good price and turn that around to buy games I want or go out garage saling more. But it's harder to find stuff now and some games I am just priced out cause they're too expensive. Luckily I still love modern gaming so I'll be pre occupied til prices come back down to earth. I'll never sell my collection unless I'm super hard up for money. So I don't care if a game is worth a $1 or $100. I just want to play it if it's good.

I do not see a pop happening. I think this is just the middle of the bubble. Personally, I never really got into collecting until this year. I was distracted with other hobbies and I am very happy that I am getting the games that I used to love in my youth, and many I could never afford to get them. But when I talk to friends and family about games, everyone wishes they were also collecting because of the extra income that you talked about. I think that if the prices came down a little it, more people who are currently holding back would also start to buy. The demand is huge, and the materials are being collected, some gets damaged, some gets thrown out. I wish I knew the next big craze in gaming, but for now I think we are are going to see prices stay or go up, and definitely not down. That's my 2 cents :P
  • i agree with this i'm 20 my first console was the megadrive 2 and i only had like 4 games for it including the first sonic and sonic 2 and i decided when i played on a friends old ps2 they were going to throw away that i missed my playstation 2 and the ps1 games and my megadrive and was like i really would love to play those agen that would be amazin so i started collecting and it is like total bliss when i can just sit down after a long day and put my xbox on or the playstation an revisit those old classics i used to love to play the nostalgia is amazing it really is :) but video game prices have shot up and it makes it so hard to be able to afford some of those games and you literally have to bargain hunt everywhere its crazy, plus no garage sales in the uk :L
