Ms. Mendezona's looks (tisay with blue-green eyes, mestiza con ojos claros) and youthful beauty would seem to make her a natural to play Maria Clara , but her coloratura voice is definitely much more appropriate for Sisa, not Maria Clara. There's so many operas with Mad Scenes for the coloratura (some very famous, like the one for Lucia di Lammermoor), and so it was just right for Maestro Felipe De Leon to include this classic scene with Sisa. It isn't "contrived" but very consistent with the novel. I was lucky to see this performance at Resorts World years ago. Brava Antoni! Ang galing mo! Maayo ka! Cantas fenomenal, y te deseo todo lo mejor. (from a Philippine diplomat, also partly of Spanish heritage, and a big opera fan).
