He’s a professional extra in movies and TV. You may have caught him as an alien Starfleet officer. When he’s home, he breeds exotic fish with a farm of 50 tanks in his 1-bedroom apartment.

In this edition of SIDE HUSTLES, we meet @AquaMalik, a fish farmer and influencer who lives with 3000 to 5000 fish (depending on the month) and started breeding when he was seven in Sri Lanka. Malik lets us into his home where he broadcasts his conservationist passion, to the anger of some breeders who feel he’s giving away fish trade secrets. Malik gets back to selling outside his apartment after lockdown, attempts to save virtually extinct species, and shares all that he’s given up and gained from his fish.

  • As a fellow fish addict, I can tell you this; don’t get it twisted, this dude works his ass off maintaining those tanks, breeding and raising those fish. This isn’t a side hustle, it’s full time hustle.
  • @pppamelis
I love that this dude refuses to work with the crappy pet store chains. He's supporting local business while supporting his own business and that's awesome.
  • I love how practical he is. Yes, he cares about the fish and their well being, but he's also very clear about how to make money and how much. Not starving for his passion, and that's a good message.

Me & my wife started keeping fish last year. We now have 8 tanks, 1 brackish. We have 4 different species of puffer fish. This dude works his ass off. I was so proud after a year of fish keeping my pea puffers, guppies, & cory catfish all decided to reproduce in the same week. I know how hard it is to keep my fish alive & healthy. This dude must work his ass off.
  • Love that his father recognized his passion and hard work, even at such an early age and did not discourage it. The world needs more parents like that.

Pretty dope side hustle, not gonna lie. Good for you, dude.

I’m glad this story got exposure. This is inspiring, even if it’s a different activity. There is something to be said about this guy and his clearly endless passion for what he considers his side hustle… if you could call it that
  • @jackwright3996
I like that his tanks have environments in them and aren't just super plain. A little thing that lets you know that he really does care about his fish
  • @TheMrDarius
I’m in the aquarium hobby and have ptsd as well. It is the most therapeutic hobby I’ve encountered. Each species of fish has its own traits and each individual fish is filled with personality that’s unique to each fish. It’s amazing.

Find someone that looks at you the way Malik looks at his fish!! 😍
  • @pikerkiler
'i want to find someone, if that doesn't happen, i'm good.' love this guy
  • @CTLee420
So nice to see that he cares about the well being of these and not just the money. Hearing him say he won’t sell to PetSmart made me so happy! Fish deserve a better life than living in a cup !
  • It’s nice to see Malik featured on Vice. I’ve been following him for like 2 years
  • You didn’t need her bro. There’s plenty of fish in the sea 😂😂😂
  • I always respect people who are passionate and obsessive about what they do, regardless how mundane or quirky the work is. And what he does is not easy, freshwater planted aquarium hobbyist myself for 20+ years, just having 1 tank keeps me busy, can’t imagine keeping and maintaining so many tanks. Keep pushing brother!
  • @RochaRules
Malik figured it out. The goal isn't to make money, the goal is to be happy ❤️
