Just build the little Toyota with a 4 cyl 5 speed manual, and offer 4x4 ... jesus , how hard is this ?
  • @user-wx4ip8og2h
$20K on paper. Once it hits the dealerships, it’ll be priced close to $35-40K

I’m in a state where almost anything can be made legal for the road. So honestly at this point I just wish a company came out with a budget truck that was marketed as a utv that cuts out certain safety features and is a no frills option. Just a super utilitarian vehicle. Car and truck prices are insane.

I owned an '83 VW Rabbit Pickup. The least truck of any truck, though the functional bed length was one thing that I feel still wins versus the new compact pickups. Hard to beat 45mpg too.
  • Cheapest used maverick on carvana is almost $30k. People need to just stop buying cars until these dealers go bankrupt or sell at normal prices.
  • For decades, car makers kept saying that there was no demand for small trucks, even tho most people knew better, now they cannot make enough. Makes you wonder how stupid their decision makers are. Every single Tacoma owner I met would tell me that he'd get offers almost on a daily basis.

I had a ‘93 Ford Ranger, rare V6! I loved driving that truck. I’m 72 now and actually would love another one made today.
  • @altshiftM
Its MSRP is 20k, dealer markup is probably going to have it at 45k for the bottom trim.
  • @SolRayz
Toyota could probably rerelease the compact pickup from the late 80s and early 90s with the 22R engine at a low price and would sell like crazy. I still see these on the road.
  • I have a 2015 Frontier that I bought new. I like it as it gives me the availability to get a couple of scoops of landscape mulch but still small enough to fit in fairly small spaces. Looks nice as well. Mine is Black

All American truck companies put a Tarrif on all Japenese trucks imported into U.S because they knew Japenese trucks make higher quality than U.S and didn't want competition. Then Japanese manufacturers got smart and made their trucks here in U.S to avoid high Tarrif taxes. Which leveled the playing field.
  • Here in Florida, there are still thousands of original old Ford Rangers. The original old small Toyota, Datsun, Mazda, and Isuzu pickups were very popular in their day. I am excited that the new small pickups are coming back now.
  • @mikegetsi1731
I drive a 96 Tacoma 4X4 with the 2.7 liter inline four. Maybe I'm biased, but I believe that truck is compact pick up perfection. I think it would sell like crazy if they re-released the same exact truck today.
  • @trevor8419
I had a Volkswagen pickup, it was small, based off the Rabbit. Mine was a diesel and easily got 50mpg.

If the Santa Cruz is in this category then it’s not just it and the Maverick that’s only available because the Ridgeline has to be in the category as well. Earlier this summer a guy showed up to an over night trail ride in a ‘22 with 3” of lift and larger tires which I admit it gave me pause at first. However when it easily went over a few places the stock height Tacomas had to go around I was impressed. Definitely wouldn’t have been my choice of vehicle to pick but it held it’s own. With Mavericks in my area still seeing high dealer markup, it makes it the same price as the usually more expensive Ridgeline.

Toyota talked of the Stouts return, but I believe the new Toyota compact truck based on the current Prius platform to be more likely in the interim. Since that Prius is a known, and tested system easily implemented. It would also be a direct challenger to both the Ford and Hyundi offerings.
