Controlling the Arctic has long been an ambition of Soviet and Russian leaders.

And it's not hard to see why: the Arctic contains vast deposits of untapped fossil fuels, it is of huge strategic importance militarily and represents an emerging trade route between Asia and the west to rival the Suez canal. But Russia is not the only country with designs on the Arctic. Canada and Denmark have also staked a claim and, in military terms, Nato is bearing down on all sides. Yet Vladimir Putin is closer than any of his predecessors to gaining control of the polar region. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores how Russia is trying to entrench its claim to the Arctic.

Half the Arctic borders Russia. Russia can do whatever they want on their territory.

I don't see a problem with Russia's claims to huge parts of the Arctic. Russia has by far the largest maritime border with the Arctic.
  • @IAMJEFFREY-cw9ns
The Arctic is literally connected to Russia. They have every right to use the resources there. Why is this even a story?
  • @ballerblocks
Lol, russia controls its territory, they cry, Russia has basess on its territory they cry more...😂 The salt in this video is rock solid

  • @ufc5148
Cry me a river, Russia has every right to claim the artic and there is nothing y’all can do about it.
  • @greengreen3370
the US and many European countries claimed islands that are not even close to their mainland, Russia however has a big border with the Arctic
  • @nafets6265
So what? artic is literally on russia sphere of territory. I don't know what the fuss of developing your own territory
  • @YorktownUSA
The Russians have been perfecting their arctic craft since the beginning of the cold war. The amount of bases, airfields, and nuclear powered icebreakers up there outclasses any other nation. And they've been navigating those waters for decades.

Putin asked for NATO membership in 2003, to which the Americans laughed and said that in general NATO was created to destroy and dismember the USSR and now Russia. and also that part of American interests be paid for by Europeans. Then the Russians remembered the old saying: “The best allies for Russia are the army and navy” and began to strengthen the army.

The Anglo-Saxons do not like the fact that Russia is placing military bases on its own territory.
  • @Zero95011
LoL what!?😂😂The Arctic is Russia. The last time I checked the Russians are at the forefront in pioneering environmental/scientific expeditions in that region. They are the only country equipped with Ice breakers that are able to explore that place.

The shores of Arctic Ocean is Russia's border line, Russian territory. The land and all its resources belongs to Russia, It invests into it and develops it for more than 100 years. It is normal that it is trying to protect it and benefit from it. What is the issue?
  • @glosium2068
    - OH, NO! Russia is seizing the Arctic waters! At the same time, NATO surrounded Russia almost along the entire western and eastern borders. I am already silent about the Baltic Sea, which is almost under the sole authority of NATO
  • @mitrogulf4073
It would be strange for a country, one of whose symbols is cold, bears, and their baptism takes place in cold water in winter, to expect something different...
  • Russian has the longest Arctic coastline. I support Russia 🇷🇺
  • @tomjones974
How dare Russia put bases on its own territory!
  • @MrScotia
I don't see a problem with Russia's claims to huge parts of the Arctic. Russia has by far the largest maritime border with the Arctic. The UK claimed the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, and countless other territories it has absolutely no borders with.
