Photographing majestic mountain scenes and exotic locations is cool and all, but you know what's really cool? Strip malls. Strip malls in Fullerton. Oh, and donut shops. Yeah, that's way cooler.

And that's why for this "Photography On Location" video I ventured out into my proverbial "own backyard" to capture some lovely old buildings and snapshots of daily life in Fullerton, California. You may see a junky donut shop or a janky thrift store, but I see potential, baby. Potential for some killer photos on 4x5 large format and 6x17 panoramic Kodak Portra 160 film.

This stuff is kind of like "architectural street photography". It's your classic tripod-mounted architectural photography with lens rises and film standard shifts but with a dash of the decisive moment. That makes it both fun and frustrating.

On this outing I put my Shen Hao HZX 45-IIa 4x5 view camera to work as well as my Shen Hao TFC 617-A. The images contained herein were made with my Nikkor 210mm f/5.6 and Rodenstock 115mm f/6.8 lenses. This equipment offered the aspect ratios and lens/film movements that I needed to bring these images to life. Then it only took 2 early mornings and 2 middays (with very specific weather conditions) to complete the package.

Thanks for watching!

I will now forever be in search of the analog photographer’s trifecta. The infamous hat-trick.

I like everything about your style, self-critique, and artistic appreciation. Great entertainment for a senior wannabe photographer.

Yesss love these on location videos.
  • Nick, you're reading my mind. Let's record these glorious structures before they are gone, gone, gone. Really underappreciated blgds.
  • You know your business is basically done and belongs to the history if Nick Carver shows up to take a picture of the building. Great video as always.
  • @Arthquel
"I want to shoot this building straight on, perfectly centered in the composition, because...well..." —vaguely gestures to self—
  • New Mercedes at the laundry Matt makes perfect sense. It’s the owner who showed up to collect all the quarters. :))))
  • @AlexArmitage
Not seen: Nick running across the street to remove the cones for his 2nd shot.

you are funny, witty, eloquent and obviously great.
  • The funny thing is, I am not really interested in doing film photography myself, but you tell such a great story on each of these on location videos that I keep coming back. I also like how you do a deep dive on the composition of each frame. Great stuff as always.

Ohhhh I felt the frustration waiting for the cars to align. Also, it's amazing how often you'll be set up for a shot then someone will wonder into the frame, stop, and start looking at their phone. Sometimes they look up, see you waiting behind your tripod, then go back to looking at their phone. I'm with you about cars too. The newer the car, the more it ruins a shot. ('New' starts at around 1990 for photo purposes.)

Love your on location films! An the way you dissect them afterwards, superb. Thank you for sharing your passion and art with us x
  • @frankhdh
"Discussing" a picture is nice. But when the photographer says what he doesn't like and does it better and the result and the better image effect can be seen, it is even more exciting and instructive! Sharpen the eye. Especially when you put so much time into exactly the picture, then everything has to fit! Thank you!
  • Once in a while some artists come-up with a fascinating and an immersive way of delivering their passion to the public. I have to confess that I quickly get sick of the reviewers and all the youtubers flashy patina they give to new products and trends coming out, 99% of big names out there... Give-or-take. From the camera positioning, the way you talk, how you pass the details that compose your rationale to the very honest transparent commenting... I don't know if you make it on purpose or just because it happens to be... but to me it has been a while since I've seen something like this on any channel. It happens sometimes to find content just like this, from the audiophile to the remote Japanese shoemaker, exquisit fine woodworker or the passionate blacksmith, but this time... Its an analog photographer. You don't only make photos, you give them a story, a meaning a soul...and finally pass that to this side... to us, The Viewers. One Big thank you Wish you all the best
