But or Rent - Small Soldiers -    • Small Soldiers

Joe Dante directed this satirical action-comedy about talking tech toys accidentally juiced-up with military microchips. After the defense industry firm Globotech takes over a small toy company, Heartland Play Systems' CEO Gil Mars (Denis Leary) gives the green light to develop a new line of action figures, requesting an upgrade to more realistic figures from Heartland toy designers Larry Benson (Jay Mohr) and fumbling Irwin Wayfair (David Cross). Mars wants toys that act like the ones in TV commercials. The results are fierce fighting figures, the Commando Elite, programmed to seek out and destroy the kindly alien-like Gorgonites. In an effort to make the toys as natural as possible, Benson inserts Globotech's most powerful military computer chips. Meanwhile, in quiet Winslow Corners, Ohio, toy-store owner Stuart Abernathy (Kevin Dunn) and his 15-year-old son Alan (Gregory Smith) are stuck in a failing business, so when Heartland truckdriver Joe (Dick Miller) stops by with the Commando and Gorgonite toys, Alan is convinced they will be hot sellers, commenting, "Maybe this store will finally make a little money." With blistering blows to their blister packs, the Commandos burst out, receive orders from their leader Chip Hazard (voice of Tommy Lee Jones) and ready for an all-out assault on the Gorgonites. When the Gorgonite leader Archer (voice of Frank Langella) begins communicating with Alan, it causes the Commandos to perceive humans as another enemy, simply by their association with the "Gorgonite scum," so an attack on the Abernathy house begins. Unfortunately, the Gorgonites can offer only limited assistance, since they have been programmed to lose. The film combines animatronics, puppetry, and computer animation. The Commando Elite voices include surviving actors from Robert Aldrich's The Dirty Dozen (1967), while the Gorgonite voices reunited several This Is Spinal Tap (1983) cast members. A dedication to Phil Hartman (the voice of Phil Fimple) after the closing credits features a brief Hartman outtake.

  • This live-action, animated feature has all the charm of the entirely animated Toy Story plus an audacity all of its own.

This one's quite underrated in my opinion. I actually find it to a rather clever movie if you start to think about how it's poking fun at the fact that society has tried to militarize the minds of people from very young ages. Even the film's marketing focused entirely on the antagonistic soldier toys instead of the peaceful monster toys.

Funny thing: They actually announced a standalone sequel to this film this year. The sequel, titled "War for the Nekron", has a new cast, but is picking up thematically where its predecessor left off.

It's a little detail, but I like how Chip's speech was pretty incoherent. He was just plug-n-playing snippets from existing speeches.
  • I loved this movie as a kid. Even remember owning an Archer toy.
  • They did make toys that were basically exact replicas of these. I had a few of them. They came in the same looking box and everything. They were cool.
  • YES! I WISHED THERE WAS A SEQUEL! There's also board games and video games too about it, I wished I had those toys, which one was your favorite? I like the black sniper and Chip Hazard, while I like Archer and the one that had to be fixed, Trapacon? But honestly I like them all. I also like the music and "Action". I also memorized just about the whole movie dialogue, that's how much I watched it as a kid playing with plastic toy soldiers.

There are tons of things that was made by a military company and brought to families and their homes.

It’s very strange that it didn’t do that well at the box office I remember seeing this when it first came out and I bought the whole set of the toys. But movies like this aren’t always appreciated until later like Scott pilgrim vs the world which a lot of people love now but did pretty bad at the box office

I loved this movie as a kid, wow it’s been awhile since I’ve watched it last.

This film is such an underrated classic! I just love watching this film as a kid, and I believe I might’ve had at least one or two of the figurines. It has action, a solid story, and a great talented cast! It is really such a shame that I did not get a sequel; maybe they might do a reboot, although it would have to be a very good one in order to compete against the Nostalgia this one. Jacob Smith, who plays Timmy, Chrissy’s little brother, was not Jack Banning in Hook. That role was played by Charlie Korsmo. Jacob did play the role of Jake, Baker in Steve Martin’s Cheaper by the Dozen 1-2 and Brian Riley in Disney Channel’s Phantom of the Megaplex. Two other films that I would love to recommend star the actors Frank Langella (Archer) and Tommy Lee Jones ( Chip Hazard): Cutthroat Island and Volcano. 👨🏼‍🦳🪖⚔️👹🏹💚💛🤎🖤

Another great Joe Dante movie is the 'Burbs with Tom Hanks. It's hilarious!!
  • @RavagHer
for military purposes having a weakness to emp would be kinda stupid in war. meaning it needs shielding from emps but it would of been too costly so they scrapped it.
  • Great movie! Thanks for doing a video on it! 👍👍👍👍👍

In case you're unaware: A fan-made Proof of Concept Trailer video was uploaded to Youtube on just over a week ago. It's title is, Small Soldiers: War for Nekron. The video has become so popular, it's been dubbed as the "spiritual sequel of Small Soldiers". Many are hoping that it's a teaser for a future movie or video game. If you're able to make any time, would you please do a reaction video? After seeing your reaction to watching the original, I'd like to see your reaction and hear your opinion on this video.

53:21 not his wife, Stuart's wife, Alan's parents. Phil and Maryann are Christy and her little brother's parents.
  • @miorandmior
The delivery guy wasn't exactly stealing it. He's giving the boy a set to sell in advance , the boy will sell it and pay him the cost which he will pay onward back to globotech. Albeit slightly later. 🙂. He's helping out the boys' shop.

Hope this movie gets more noticed in the next several weeks because of the sequel. It’s like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, they’re getting a video game and now people are checking out what’s the hype.
