Why Monarchs Matter and How We Can Help

Published 2024-03-28
Our iconic Monarch Butterflies are truly a natural wonder. Their incredible 3,000-mile migration from Mexico to Canada and back takes 4 generations to complete. It is a wonder of nature and unique within the entire animal kingdom. Although resilient, they need our help. Monarch populations have declined over 90% in recent decades. Humans have created this problem but can also solve it. In this webinar we will discuss why the Monarch is so important, and simple ways we can all do our part to prevent their extinction.

I live in Maine but I have found the same thing, monarchs will choose swamp milkweed over other kinds. I've had trouble getting it established from seedlings due to too much pressure from monarch caterpillars. Prairie moon nursery has an incredible selection of milkweed species.

47:00 oleander aphids: I just let them be in year one, then the next year, my milkweed had all sorts of ladybugs that kept them away. Nature took over.
