Super Mario Bros. Wonderland 87 (Super Mario Wonderland Beta/Prototype revival) Part 6 - Nostalgic?

World 7 and the beginning of 8. After the game's launch, world 7 will undergo further renovations and this 8-3 will be remade. We start with a level full of deja vus and references that anyone who played Mario will recognize right away. In the second we have a forest level with more piranha plants, but this time there is the wonder effect of a giant plant singing in the background and the notes fall towards Mario. Reference to the original Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the Nintendo Switch. In the castle, a slightly more different shape, but in reference to the first Super Mario Bros. For this reason, there is no door for the boss and everything is done in the same room on the main level.

At the beginning of world 8, everything is ready! It's a deserted, lifeless, gray and dark place, just with skeletons and fire pointers, and also blocks full of poisonous mushrooms and eggplants.

It's a very strange and strange environment, with that empty atmosphere, and oddly enough, it's something that, as simple as it may be, is a level theme that has never been seen in any other Mario game.

By the way, when this version comes for the release, you're in for a surprise! A reference to one of the Wonder Effects concepts that were not approved for SMB Wonder. I won't give any spoilers. Nintendo had exactly the same idea as me, but with one difference that when you play you will notice. And it's not the first time that I've had ideas like Nintendo, because before the launch of the Switch game and any knowledge about SMB Wonder, I had already done things that I didn't even imagine were there. And that's good! It means that my ideas are close to what Nintendo would do for Mario and his friends' games.

Since this is a developer gameplay, I'm using the shortcut to have instant mushroom. This also helps when there are delays in movement commands.

My gameplay was rushed due to the limited time on the recorder. From level 7-1 to 8-1. Some things have already been updated and some musics have been simplified. However, all assets, sounds and things shown in the video are subject to change in the future.

Here I bring you some news from the special world. What am I up to? You will only find out if you collect all the Wonder Seeds in the fan game.

Original description
This is the prototype version of the game mixed with the physics of the current version. It contains many differences in the way of playing and the artstyle, which would be inspired by the first Super Mario Bros.

The story has also undergone changes! In this version, Blue Bowser (for those who don't know, he is Bowser's brother who only appears in the Japanese SMB2) is making a big mess in the Flower Kingdom. He wants to be as mean as Bowser. Next to him is Blue Bowser Jr. and together they try to stop the Mario Brothers from proceeding. The story takes place after the Japanese SMB2 and before SMB3. It's like a game from 1987.

The soundtrack is much simpler than the current version, as it is made up of several musics that create a "fantasy world" atmosphere.

The special demo only goes to level 4 from world 5. There you will have a warning that this is the end of the demo. It will soon be updated for more content.

This version was combined with the source of the real version of
"Super Mario Wonderland" so that it has the same physics and bug fixes, so some assets from the regular version are present in memory, but unused. SteelBill Koopa was not the initial plan! It started as Bowser Jr, and ended up going to Blue Bowser's son.

Mario Elephant was not present, but due to the merger of the beta sources with the current one, I had to make the Mario Elephant sprites in the project's initial style. Some levels had to be done in the present day or they would be empty rooms. Wonder Flower now appears at the top of the screen with sparkling music to warn you. Sometimes a shooting star power will appear instead.

The effects of the Wonder Flowers do not cause a total change in the scenery like in the other version because here the room does not change, only the formation of objects that are not tiles in the game editor. Each world has 4 levels and each castle would be generic
with the same miniboss and boss doors.

Some sprites I had to update currently so as not to have leftover sprites that were from Legacy SMB3.

Some of the ideas here will be reused in the current fan game and others in the sequel, if the fan game is successful.

  • When you get around to finishing world 8 of super Mario advance 5, would it be possible for you to use the “Peach is paved with her kingdom saved” text from SMB2J instead of what it says in All-Stars? Since you have to redo all of the sound to match what the gba could play, possibly even a cover of that version of the song too.

    What's the difference between this 87 version and the first version you put out? I'm guessing that it means if it was actually released in 87
  • Bug report: attacking as Elephant Luigi will make the attacking animation indefinite, thus making me unable to jump or run until I lose a life. Not sure if the same also applies to Mario

  • muito legal alias uma pergunta, depois de ver os videos de desenvolvimento do kiddy kong's showtime, eu meio que me senti inspirado a querer fazer o meu próprio fan game de donkey kong country, o único problema é que eu não consigo achar uma engine com o mesmo aspecto e mequânicas do jogo original, por enquanto eu tentarei fazer uma do zero, mas qual tipo de engine vc usa (se tivesse como baixa-la, eu ficaria agradecido)
