Women's Media Center Beverly Wettenstein Women's History Lecture 2024 is the second in a series of lectures named for Beverly Wettenstein. This lecture - "Black Women Speak for Freedom, Justice, and Democracy: Historical Perspectives", will be given by Dr. Janet Dewart Bell. Dr. Bell is Chair of the Women's Media Center board and President and Founder, LEAD InterGenerational Solutions.

A social justice activist with a doctorate in leadership and change from Antioch University, Dr. Bell's lecture will be inspired by her latest book, "Blackbirds Singing," which champions speeches by Black women from the Civil War to the twenty-first century and "Lighting the Fires of Freedom, African American Women in the Civil Rights Movement," conversations with nine leaders of the civil rights movement.

Following her lecture, Dr. Dewart Bell will explore the historical impact of Black women leaders on society today with Dr. Koritha Mitchell. Professor Mitchell is a literary historian, award-winning author, and cultural critic. Women's Media Center Vice Chair, Erica González Martínez, will make introductory remarks.

Dr. Bell's lecture was premiered online on Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19th at 12.00 pm.
