Wienerschnitzel is an American fast food chain that specializes in hot dogs and was founded in 1961 by former Taco Bell employee John Galardi as Der Wienerschnitzel (despite the fact that in German, the correct article would be das not der). Despite the name, the company does not ordinarily sell Wiener schnitzel, although it did so on one occasion as a promotion.[2] Wienerschnitzel locations are found predominantly in California and Texas; other locations are found in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Washington. Outside the United States of America, there are stores located in Guam and Panama

I worked at the original Wienerschnitzel in Wilmington in 1982 while I was a student in high school. The restaurant is still there in business to this very day.

I remember in 1967 they sold Coke in a glass Coke glass for 15 cents, rather than 10 cents in a paper cup. My friends and I went well out of our way to drive through every couple of days for the month or two they were running the promotion, getting 15 cent Cokes in the glass. I still have about 8 or 10 of those glasses all these years later.
  • Der Weinerschnitzel was my first job in 1973 in Bell, California. Loved working there - we didn't have burgers at the time. Our orders were marked in pencil on paper bags, we added the totals together and had an old-fashioned cash register on which we pressed the keys to mark the total. I like to think I had a hand in inventing chili fries, since, when closing, I'd mix the old fries and leftover chili together and take them home. We also grilled the Polish sandwiches, which made them so much better! Whenever I'm in So Cal (I live in Oregon now), I must have my fill of Wienerschnitzel!

Both of these guys were genius…Bell had several failures but he never gave up. So popular while growing up in California

Making the drive thru go thru the building was really an ingenious move!

Loved the DW in Alameda, CA during my high school days. First fast food on my own when I got my driver's license. 2 Kraut Dogs and a Coke for under a dollar in 1969! Later became a hero to my daughter and her friends when I took them to a DW in Santa Cruz, CA which had a drive thru. Kids were amazed when you actually DROVE THRU!!

Graduating in 1970 in North Highlands California Der Wienerschnitzel was always the late-night munchie joint after parting all night! I moved to Santa Cruz in 1972 right next to a Der Wienerschnitzel on Soquel Blvd and at the end of the night they would give me hot dogs for the dogs and of course I would return the favor by giving the employee's a joint. Great Days thank you Der Wienerschnitzel
  • I worked at the one in Buena Park, California, while in high school (1979-80). 2 teens were left alone each night to close. One night, the place was robbed and the teen girl was taken. One night when I was working, someone shot at the building and the glass door almost shattered in my face. Other than the dangers of closing, I have really good memories of working there!

Sad but true. I was looking for a German cuisine restaurant in the Los Angeles. Der Wienerschnitzel came in at the top of the list.
  • I loved going to Wienershnitzel on Central Ave in Montclair CA at lunchtime as a student at Montclair HS! The Class of ‘78 rules!

Mustard Dogs were my favorite when I was a kid. As I grew older, my tastes became more sophisticated and the Polish Sandwich became my favorite.

When the Bryan, TX store opened, it was so popular that they found it difficult to keep up with the demand. It still sits at the same location, after 50 years.

I worked at our local Wienerschnitzel back in 1980 and it is still open to this day. From what I'm told, this Wienerschnitzel is the only one east of the Mississippi.

The Polish Dog was my favorite as a kid, in the 60’s. Escondido California.

So good! There was one right around the corner from our house in Huntington Beach, my grandmother loved walking there in the afternoon. We had great talks and enjoyed the dogs (the burgers were pretty good too) grandma loved the chili dogs. RIP Grammy . I remember “The Delicious One” funny commercial
