Fun fact: to this day, this is the only time any two nations from the same confederation outside of Europe and South America have ever faced each other in a World Cup match! No two teams from Asia, Africa, or Oceana have ever faced each other in a World Cup (and no, Australia vs Japan in 2006 does not count, because Australia was still in the Oceana region at that point and hadn't joined the Asian confederation yet)! This was also the very first time ever that a knockout round matchup was played in which neither team was from either Europe or South America! Yes, before this, every knockout round match in World Cup history featured at least one team from either Europe or South America! And for that historic moment to end up being between not only between two teams from the same Confederation, but for the two teams that share a border and be arguably each others' biggest rivals in international football is stunning! Yes, this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event where all the stars aligned and the world got to witness something very special (obviously, no two teams from the same confederation outside of Europe or South America have ever faced each other since, and the only other knockout round game between two teams both not from Europe or South America in all of history happened in 2010 when the United States played Ghana in the Round of 16. This was a truly unique event in which nothing similar to it had ever happened before and nothing similar to it has repeated in the 16 years of tournament play since)!

For a USA fan, this is probably our favorite "Dos A Cero!" win.

I remember Mexico was so confident about having this game in the bag. Even Germany were already talking about facing Mexico in the quarterfinals. But the USMT team kept quite and focused and got the job done. Heartbreaking defeat for Mexico.

  • I think Claudio Reyna conceived his son Gio right after this game. 18 years...story checks out! Just scored his first goal for the national team yesterday

Wow. We’ve actually won more knockout round games than Mexico in the last 25 years 🇺🇸
  • @jonzcastle4062
Had to come back after today's win 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
  • @maherali6053
The best US team ever. Golden generation. They did well in this world cup
  • Until a bigger game with more implications is played between the US and Mexico, the US will always have more bragging rights because of this game here.

I'm Asian so I can watch this tournament during daytime. My childhood was filled by tons of matches that way and this world cup nicely awakened my interests in football. That changed my life forever!
  • @markgarduno4597
Whe the US had a great team and Captain America, Landon Donovan.
  • @japeri171
The USA was unlucky to play in the quarter-finals against Germany.
  • @cardenasr.2898
  • @BKRagequitz
I didn't know the current USA manager was on this team, he played quite well in the back too from what I saw
  • @luistuaa
Lo dijo hace unos poquitos días Oswaldo Sánchez: Estábamos agrandadísimos para ese partido. Recuerdo cuando acabó el Italia vs. México pensar: Estos se van a confiar y vamos a perder y justo eso pasó.
  • @joehawkins3823
This was the first USMNT game I ever watched live. Thought this team was going in such an amazing direction. Ugh.
  • @JohnDoe-ls1rf
3:45 jajajjaa jajajaj No supo que hacer y se tiró RIDÍCULAMENTE! Pobre Hernández. Increíble que le hayan cobrado.
  • It's 2022. There's a world cup in Qatar. Berhalter manages USMNT in which Claudio's son, Gio is in. Gosh time is crazy.
