Venezuelan opposition leaders Edmundo Gonzalez and Maria Corina Machado are calling on the military to abandon President Nicolas Maduro, alleging election fraud. They claim to have won the recent election by a substantial margin, though Maduro’s government has not provided voting tallies. In response to the protests, the government has arrested around 2,000 opponents and caused at least 20 deaths. Human rights groups criticise the severe crackdown, including increased arbitrary arrests.
