My ten year old son plants potatoes in his garden every year and he always has me grab the blue potatoes as soon as they come in stores so he can choose a red and "regular" to grow along with them. He cares for them all season then has me make him a red, white and blue potato meal every year lol. This year he plans on making a roast with his patriotic potatoes in his star wars crock pot! Just a heads up if you try to cook the blue in different ways, sometimes they turn grey but still taste fine.

I've grown potatoes for 50 years in upstate New York and never chit. And I have a beautiful harvest every year.

Perfect timing on this video! I wasn't planning to plant potatoes this year, but I found a random potato in perfect condition in my compost bin yesterday, so apparently I am now growing potatoes this year 😂

Corn starch is great for dusting cut edges of potatoes, it speeds up the drying time immensly and you get less chance of rot when you do plant

I do the 5 gallon bucket way a little different. 4" of soil, put the potato down. Cover with enough soil to leave only about 4" from the top of the bucket. Then when the plant grows up out of the bucket put about 2-3" of soil. Then put mulch on top to protect the potatoes from the sun to prevent the green potato. Love your videos Kevin! I recommend you and a couple others to all new gardeners because you guys are easy to follow and are great teachers.

I finally planted my potatoes yesterday after work. I wanted to get them in the ground 3-4 weeks ago but it has been raining so much in California I had to till my garden 3 times just to get the soil to dry out enough to plant. One thing to mention with potatoes, don’t water them till they sprout unless your soil is powder dry.

The first crop I planted in my brand new garden this year is potatoes! Red Norland, Blue Adirondack, and Yukon Gold. Flanked on either side of the bed by garlic to help protect against aphids. So excited for the crop!

I planted a bag of small red potatoes February 2 and two bunches of green onions my sister picked up for me. I have a disability and can`t drive so I have to grow my own fresh produce or do without. I`m gonna use this planting to make seed potatoes and I may replant some in the fall. Transplanting green onions is a great way to have fresh green onion tops for a long time and eventually a lot of fresh seeds. I also planted a dozen more fruit trees a week ago and I`m growing Parisian Carrots to mass produce seeds since they were so expensive for so few. I have Danvers Half Long Carrots growing but I`m not sure how well they`ll do but I still have over 3000 more seeds to get it right. The Parisian Carrots are little round ones and very easy to grow. I want to try peanuts because we used to grow them.

The Ruth Stout method works great up here in Vermont. I I throw them on the top of the ground covered with 8 to 12 inches of hay. I may water them once a month maybe It has the hay decomposes I’ll add another 6 to 8 inches by Midsummer Harvesting is ridiculously easy. Move the hay to the side and grab the potatoes!

Later on could we get an update on the grown bag and bucket potatoes, it would be pretty cool!

Adirondack Blues are my favorites. You can't easily find them in grocery stores, so you have to grow them. The leaves of the plant are a beautiful purple bluish green, so they work well as decorative plants as well. The main drawback is the potatoes are such a dark blue color, they can be hard to spot in the soil when you're digging them up.

Your videos inspired me not giving up on gardening, even tough this season was a nightmare haha, It was either days with crazy storms or days with a raging nuclear level sun. The watermelons vines only produced about 7 fruits, and the pumpkins/squash only 5, and small ones at that. But anyway, love the content and the cannel hosts ❤

Good information. I have been growing potatoes 55 years and lived in 3 different states. What works in 1 geographical location does not work in another location. A 3 eye seed potato will grow 3 stems and each stem will grow 1 lb of new potatoes that = 3 lbs of new potatoes. A 5 eye potatoes will grow 5 stems and 5 lbs of new potatoes. An 8 eye seed potato might grow 8 lbs of new potatoes but its best to cut an 8 eye potatoes in 1/2 to make 2 cuttings with 4 eyes each. The best seed potatoes are golf ball size with 1 or 2 eyes per seed potato spaced about 4" apart. Space seed potatoes according to the number of eyes on each seed potato. I plant 5 eye seed potatoes 8" spacing a 30 ft row will have 45 seed potatoes and should produce about 225 lbs of new potatoes. Weather, rain, soil all determine crop size. I live in TN if I plant potatoes April 1st harvest is about July 1st we are having 100° weather with no rain my garden is dry as desert I must water to have a good harvest. If I plant potatoes Aug 1st I get larger harvest Nov 1. If I plant March 1st that is good too unless we have too much rain. Last spring we had 37" of rain March to May. Potatoes are very tricky to grow but not hard to grow, everything needs to be perfect to get the best maximum size harvest. Keep seed potatoes at 75°f or warmer in bright shade to break the doormat cycle. I start sprouting my seed potatoes Jan 1 to plant March 1 or April 1. I wash seed potatoes to remove natural enzymes that prevent sprouting.
