How Girls Und Panzer Pulled Off The Perfect Heroic Sacrifice...In A Sports Anime

Published 2022-12-22
We all love a good heroic sacrifice in a story, but how do you make it work when you know, and the characters know, that no one is in actual danger?

Well, Girls Und Panzer Der Film figured it out, and delivered one of the best heroic sacrifice scenes you'll ever see, despite us all knowing there was no physical danger for the characters.

Join me as I take a closer look at just what makes this scene work so well, and how it's much more than an elaborate gag.

Girls Und Panzer Der Film is just amazing.

They very simply played it completely straight and serious. The very dramatic music, the dramatic last lines("Its been an honor to fight alongside with you!"), and the valiant last stand against the enemies.

This scene hits even harder after reading the "Saga of Pravda" manga.
  • @EvilDoresh
Since no other school team has done anything close to this, I'm just gonna assume that Pravda High School has a slight flair for the dramatic.

I can think of another movie scene that hit hard. When the Oorai girls have to say goodbye to the school ship and it's departure. The way it made the audience tear up along with Rabbit Team made it feel like you just lost everything too.

We have to remember that in "Saga of Pravda" it's shown and well known that she's a pure genius, almost a "new Napoleon". Though the Pravda girls know they're gonna get knocked out they most likely know that so long Katyusha is still in the match it doesn't if they're in the match or not.
  • What I find amazing, is that Girls und Panzer is a show with overdone tropes and yet it still feels fresh. Underdog school must win in a sport against all odds. Power of Friendship. Etc. I also find it interesting how a show with this many characters, is able to give personality to them all. (Plus making a supporting character, and not the main character, the most loved character in the show. My waifu Yukari).

i never noticed the water allowing for the tank drifting @3:01 I just though "hey its anime... anime does strange things with physics all the time" but now it make the scenes that bit more realistic

Man, Der Film is literally peak Girls Und Panzer. It takes all the best moments of the show and cuts them even more finely while adding a little flourish to it. I've honestly never seen a better movie that provides such a complete, engaging package, let alone an animated movie. It's practically perfect. But I think you're understating the gravitas of the scene by portraying it as just a silly mock battle. Sure, no one's at risk of dying, but everyone involved knows it's their one chance to save Ooarai from shutting down, and everything everyone does matters. A loss in the moment will affect them in the future, and knowing what's at stake - the ability of their friends to practice shenshadou together - will invariably get to them and get on their nerves. In Katyusha's case, having her teammates around would likely provide a sense of stability and assuredness in an otherwise tense and maybe stressful situation, and them being absent when she's so used to having them around in dire straights would no doubt affect her greatly. I can't help but feel for her everytime it plays out, because while no one's dying, she's still losing her friends, even if temporarily. When they're gone, she can't rely on her most trusted aides, and afterwards, she's basically alone, especially since the scene itself proves just how much everyone respects and admires her. Even if I wasn't a loyal follower of hers, I'd still be feeling for her just as much as if they'd actually sacrificed themselves. It's a silly scene played completely straight, but there's serious weight to it and the entire movie speaks to an honest sense of sportsmanship. It's still a serious sacrifice, even if no one died.

by my count there are three scenes that bring an all to human aspect to this anime: First: the School-ships departure on a heading towards the breakers eventually Second: the Noble sacrifice of the Students of Pravda Third: The moment of silent understanding just before Maho and her crew fire a "blank?" into Miho's tank, in which both acknowledge what needs to be done. the last one had me on the floor, as in devastated

I have only cried watching 2 films: Hachiko, and GuP der Film. I think this tells a lot.
  • 5:11 See i think they made an excellent choice to use Pravda here, see the Pravda girls are kind natrually LARPing a bit in the show so it makes senses they got caught up in the moment, I don't think this would have worked so well if they had used one of the other girls like Saunders or ST Gloriana girls, with the possible exception of Chi Hatan.
  • @megarboh790
when I first watched this scene I find it quite funny due to how suddenly dramatic they were when it's just a sport
  • @HrLBolle
on the no ones gonna die: I wouldn't state this as an absolut as it could be that a direct hit with a shell from "Karl Gerät" might overpower the protective layer of carbon filament used to prevent most of the shrapnel related injuries. I think that most of the "weaker" tanks would suffer said fate if hit directly, even if we assume that the load is light because the rules of Sensha-dō stipulate no true lethal loads to be Klara only survives because the impact appears to be at about the same point the middle of another T34/85 would occupy if parked next to each other.

I like how people say that nobody will die yet I’m pretty sure there is a scene where an M26 Pershing’s turret flew off the tank and I’m sure nobody can survive that
  • This scene really hit hard. We know how much Nonna, Klara, Nina, and Alina cared about Katyusha. So when there was no other option, and Pravda was going to be wiped out, Nonna, Klara, Nina, and Alina all chose to sacrifice themselves to save Katyusha. The stakes were low, but the emotional impact of the scene was what was important. Everything was going poorly with the University team crushing the Ooarai Alliance after their surprised attack and forced a whole third of the team to retreat, while the other two were on the backfoot. Everything about this scene, and everything you said about the girls playing it straight and the scene being serious inspite of the stakes being so low. This was truly a beautiful scene that shows the true character of each of the Pravda girls. And this whole video, and everything you said was completely true. And it still gets to me even after seeing the scene multiple times and knowing that everyone will be fine. And I am eagerly awaiting your next GuP video, especially those about the characters and how perfect they are in their various depictions, scenes, every time they're on screen really. So thank you for this video, and I can't wait for the next one. I know this is late, but this video came out before Christmas, so I hope you had a good Christmas and I wish you a Happy New Year!
  • The thing I love about this show is that it knows who their primary audience is. Autistic Tank Nerds and Tank Normies. It'll appeal to any Tank Nerd, as seeing the suspension move make them drool. And Tank Normies, or people who like Tanks but don't make learning about them their passion, will enjoy the flashy/energetic battle scenes. I have seen some people on r/TankPorn bash the Show for being too boring (especially when they only saw ep1 which IMO isn't fair) or that there is little Tank representation. I mean. If you never watch a different tank movie/show other than GuP and only Play WoT where 90% of the Polish Tech treevare Blueprint prototypes then I get it-ish. But if you have the audacity to tell me with a straight face that GuP only has well known tanks (besides the BT-42), while also saying Fury is a Master piece for its diverse tank selection then make your own show/movie and Show us what the StrvpzkpfwM4A3(76)W-HVSST-34/76KV-2/Lt.Vz.35 that only Joe Rogan knows and the only evidence to claim that this tank existed on Paper is a Crayon Drawing. Yeah I also wanna see my Favourite tank in GuP, but that doesn't stop me from loving the show and what it has to offer. I Know it was his Opinion (and a wrong one at that) and I shouldn't judge. Also the average citizen in Japan knows little to nothing about WW2 for very specific reasons that shall not be told, so running into this show is like running into The Chieftain at the age of 5. (This is a conversation that actually happened and also one of the few times I got mildly madat an anonymous person on reddit)
  • Another good video. The new mic sounds much better. Make sure to record additional takes for parts you stuttered, or slured. I'm looking forward to your next video!
