Every speedrun world record is exciting, but there is something extra special about breaking minute barriers. This is the story about how a single glitch made Portal 2's sub-hour speedrun possible, and just how absurd that glitch is.

This video is a pretty drastic oversimplification of the strategy. Out of bounds skips are confusing, a lot of the vocabulary I use regarding "random" things isn't entirely true, but I hope it makes for an interesting video nonetheless.

Thanks to attmayMB, baister09, and Can't Even for helping with the video creation process.

This video is not an actual speedrun world record, nor a speedrun tutorial. This video is a showcase of a speedrun strategy that goes in-depth to the various tricks, glitches and bugs that make the strategy possible.

If someone beat my best time with a metronome I'd be tick tick ticked.

Yay the only other important discovery I’ve ever made
  • As a musician, I can 100% believe this. (good) Professional musicians have impeccable time. As in, knowing where the beat is exactly after minutes of silence. There are an insane amount of similarities between musicians and speedrunners: Muscle memory, precise inputs, (in some games) the ability to make decisions quickly based off of the run so far, etc. There are many musicians who do things that are borderline human. There are musicians who can perfectly control their tone as far as incremental changes in pitch, or play at incredibly fast speeds while improvising. (they make up what they're playing on the spot.) The difference? There have been great musicians for centuries. Speedrunning is less than 30 years old. I have no doubt that speedrunners have the same dedication to their craft that musicians have, and that they will push the boundaries of what is physically possible just as far as musicians given enough time. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that no one has used a metronome sooner. When I speedbridge in minecraft, I like using music at the same tempo.

  • For how ambitious and impressive portal 2 is even to this day, it’s really surprising to me that with all the physics and the whole entire concept of moving portals to any location, theres not that many serious glitches, or at least not many glitches that you could encounter by just playing casually.

It's such a weird thing to hear this much Celeste music in speedrunning related videos. I know the game is popular right now, but I got so used to listening this soundtrack myself that it still feels off. Great video, by the way.
