Steven Rothery (born 25 November 1959) is an English musician. He is the original guitarist and the longest continuous member of the British rock band Marillion. Rothery has described his own style on the guitar as a mix of Andrew Latimer, Steve Hackett and David Gilmour. He has also cited Joni Mitchell as an influence, especially her use of open tunings, which he believed created a very harmonically rich sound.

Mr. Rothery is so unique in his approach and sound. Every note is pure joy. A person cannot make the sounds of heaven without love in their heart. Music that brings a tear to the eye and flight to the soul. The sounds of life and passion. Thanks for the beautiful music! It helped me through cancer recovery twice. Love and respect, Bill
  • Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Eric and Jimi, Dave Gimore, Steve Hackett and other Genesis guitarists. Known them for decades. Now I have met another great. Thank you S. R.😊

So much people talk about David Gilmour, but not many do it about Steve Rothery. With only one note he can touch your heart.

Steve’s guitar playing is on a level far beyond that of 99% of other players. First listened to Marillion in 1984 and was blown away. He’s one of the very few who sound just as good live as in the studio.

At 75, I just discovered him and I am knocked out just how good he is.
  • I'd know Steve Rothery's playing anywhere. Like Steve Hackett, he's got that undefinable something. I catch myself holding my breath whilst I'm listening ... totally spell-binding.

What an ambient experience. A man who can play fast, but chooses to play slow. And can choose to play on any guitar, but chooses a Squier. He should be everyone's hero :)
  • I feel deprived!! How did i not know this band? I fell in LOVE with Marillion about 6 months ago. Never knew of them. Stumbled across em by accident! This is my favorite band EVER! In my 52 years of living this band tops em all. Stunning voice, followed by soul touching guitar! This is pure heavenly music. PLEASE COME TO THE US??? Bucket list band!

  • @slipshatch
The best band with the best guitar player of all time full stop. Thank you for the great music over the years. Still as magic as ever.

Steve Rothery one of the most underrated guitarists, Marillion, the most underrated band. Sad really 🥺
  • @TheSurfingAlien
My absolute favorite is the Sugar Mice solo because it compliments the mood of the song and (at that time) Fish's vocals in an absolutely incredible way!

No other guitarist can make his guitar cry with melancholy in rock like this man can... He's a genius.

Rothery is superb. His solos are so emotional. I just don't experience his intensity with other guitarist nowadays. Love this band and its musicians.
