Columbia University Calls for Investigation Into Leadership Over Pro-Palestine Protests

The President of US' Columbia University, Nemat Minouche Shafik, has come under renewed pressure as the university's senate sharply rebuked her administration for clamping down on a pro-Palestinian protest at its New York campus. She had allowed the New York police to dismantle a tent encampment set up on campus by students protesting against Israel’s offensive on Gaza. This led to the arrest of hundreds of protesters on April 18 and prompted similar protests in several other universities across the country. US President Joe Biden has called the protests "anti-semitic" and "dangerous", while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has compared them to the lead-up to the Holocaust.
