"Attacking an intruder in their home" - No. They did not "attack" anyone. They defended their home and rightly so. The word attack implies instigation.

I worked with a young man in NC in 2004 who owned a Pitbull. He said his name was "Snack." I said, "Jonathan, why did you name him Snack?" He said, "Because that's what your ass is if you break into my house."

Never blame an animal for defending his family home, it's their job, we have bred them for thousands of years to do this.
