All Genius, All Buffoon: 100 Years of Richard Feynman - A Documentary

Published 2018-06-29
In 2018 the Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman would've turned 100 years old. But Richard Feynman was so much more than just one of the greatest physicists, the greatest scientists, of the 20th century. He was a beautiful writer, a man of boundless curiosity, a bongo player, a clown. Fellow physicist Freeman Dyson once said that Feynman was "Half genius, half buffoon". He would later revise those words, replacing them with "All genius, all buffoon."

This audio documentary, presented by Robin Ince, features new and exclusive interviews with those that knew him and have been inspired by him including Professor Brian Cox, Dr Helen Czerski, Dr Marcus Chown and Dr Leonard Mlodinow.

I called his office at CalTech 5 minutes after he left for the last time. His secretary was so kind to to me and told me how disappointed that he would be to have missed my call. I was on leave from the military and had been studying THE RED BOOKS for 3 years straight, he was my hero. When I got a Caltech t shirt from his office, I knew just how kind his secretary was to me. I went on to study and teach physics, though I was never able to get my PhD, I did inspire a number of my student to go on to get advanced degrees and that was my proudest achievement in teaching. I still have that Caltech t-shirt from 1988, how astounding is that? I still have my RED BOOKS TOO and I eventually got to teach students across the country. Feynman inspired me to do that. Now, I'm teaching physics to my wife and grandson! That's all thanks to Dick Feynman!👍😎❤️

Goodness me, this was magnificent! Subbed - all day... Thank you! 👍

I love this man. It gives me feeling it is still worth it, living a life with that intimate deep feeling of meaning. And this meaning could easily be beyond words and even concepts. You can feel his commitment to life when he is playing his drums.

Thank you for this - thank you!

This man got me goin on quantum mechanics... and his method for learning heavy stuff is also quite good!
  • My mentor. Almost every aspect of my current perspective derives from some type of Feynman influence.

I like how his dark side is also mentioned. Makes him feel, as was said a couple of times already, more human.

first video i've ever seen that doesnt have a single dislike

Oppenheimer referred to Feynman as his MVP toward the end of their Manhattan Project work -- wise choice!

It's like carl disappeared off the face of the earth.
  • Young people tend to be snobbish And more self righteous, Yet this generation, in many ways is more hideous in then previous one! In the discipline of physics has been Stagnated for over 40 years.

No video of Feynman. Associates discussing him. Meh.
  • I like Feynman, but he followed the rules too much. If you think you know quantum physics then you probably didn't follow the rules that have been put in place which are wrong.
