Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Shop Guitar!

Published 2023-06-14
Adam is so stoked to get back to the cave after a few weeks of filming abroad, and one of the first things he opens up is a package from luthier Ted Woodford (aka ‪@twoodfrd‬), one of Adam's favorite YouTube creators. Ted has sent back a 1970's Japanese electric guitar he restored for Adam--documented on his own channel--and Adam completes the build with a few aesthetic additions of his own. Time to break in this shop guitar!

  • Ted Woodford is so much more than a luthier. If you browse thru the comments on his page, many people find comfort in them. It's like therapy without it being like therapy. If you aren't familiar with him, you are missing out. It's a great relax and rewind channel.

Classic Adam, working between and around the strings instead of just loosening them and moving them out of the way because he's so impatient 😂
  • Adam sure knows how to build suspense. I'm 5 minutes in and sweating over whether he's going to put a neck rest under the neck or just one-day build himself a headstock break. At six minutes I can finally let out my breath. May have to pause and lie down.

Love Ted Woodford's videos, not only is he an expert on repairs but also entertaining and informative about the history of guitars.
  • @nascargas
Love Teds channel. Its like a calm in the storm even if he is having a heck of a time with a non compliant guitar. Was doubly thrilled when he brought your guitar out. Been a follower of yours since the first episode of Mythbusters way back when. It was like to different worlds collided in the best of ways. A major plus here is seeing a happy customer of Teds. I commented on his channel that I must be in good company if you also followed his channel! 🎉

I am now a practicing luthier and my knowledge came almost completely from Ted. He even graciously advised on a repair path on a Gibson for me when I wasn't sure which method would be better. Awesome and humble man with mad skills!

Nice use of an old pick guard. My wife hates that I collect and keep that sort of stuff. Ted Woodford is one of my favorites too. I have been a woodworker for 50 years, and an amateur luthier for about 5. Ted is really, really proficient (my highest praise - I don't do superlatives). Keep up the great work, and collabs.

Ted amazes me with his patience and dedication. And he takes no prisoners. Looks great, Adam.

Ted is an absolutely incredible craftsman and he could explain paint drying and I would gladly just listen for hours. He's gifted in the ability to speak as well as bringing back guitars from the grave. So glad you're in contact with him!!

Ted got me through the pandemic. He is a luthier/artist, plus he is entertaining to watch.

Love this, and I LOVE Ted's videos too. Ted and "Uncle Doug" are the titans of guitar/amp repair vids on Youtube- soothing, funny, knowledgeable, and focused on the content first, rather than being a personality and mugging for the camera. One word of caution: that shelf liner rubber sheeting is great for keeping things in place, but it reacts strangely with some guitar finishing products- I have had it leave marks on guitars finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, so I wouldn't advise leaving a guitar sitting on that stuff for any period of time, or using it as packing material. Learn from the mistakes of my unintentionally-checkered past!

Adam, I have been waiting for this moment since I was 14 watching MB. I actually reached out many many years ago about that guitar in hopes I could be the one to repair it for you as I’m in the Bay Area also. I’m super glad to see it finally put together. Now let’s get you a bass and you can come see the fun amps we build in the east bay. Shout out to Ted for being the person we all truly aspire to be.
  • @lepetitnabot
YES!!! Never saw this collaboration between two of my favorite YouTubers coming, but I'm loving it.
  • @SevenBates
This is one of those situations where I get excited to thank you for something cool. Seriously. I'm a moderately terrible Luthier, and I love how you consistently take something I do all the time, and casually introduce me to a brilliantly fresh technique, methodology, or just some combination I'd never considered. I won't bore you with the details but you just saved me enough time to be a better... everything. Just by brilliantly using your success and passions, authentically. It's always been fun. You just passed something on. Thank you, sir. ❤
  • I’ve been watching Ted every week for a few years. He’s the Bob Ross of guitar repair.
  • Adam did great , I am a guitar repairer etc. of 40 years +, have watched both your channels for ever , the truss rod cover is way above a usual first try , you have the best super glues!!!! .You may have gone about it all in slightly different ways with differing results but that makes this video. This is a job you could charge full price for in my opinion. Thanks has been a great video collaboration, there should be more of it on YT.
  • Before I even clicked I was thinking Adam would appreciate Ted's channel and then he opens with a trademark "Hey gang!". Lovely stuff.
