Fun fact: The original author of the book considers the Dead by Daylight crossover canon and even wrote part of the lore of how Sadako and Yoichi got dragged into the Entity's realm. This good relationship with both parties has allowed for more skins and lore for both characters while the are in the realm.
  • In japanese folklore, there's actually a name for what kind of ghost that Sadako is. She's a onryo, a vengeful ghost. The stories involving onryo usually have them return from beyond the grave to take revenge on someone who wronged them in life, usually it's a man. In kabuki theatre, a Onryo's costume consists of a long black wig, a white burial kimono and make up consisting of white foundation combined with face painting.

The Danny Gonzalez shoutout was very unexpected but extremely appreciated

This story has a special place in my heart. The Ring (2002) was my first ever horror movie I watched alone, and I was just 5 years old. While my mother was at work one night the relative watching me wasn't actually paying attention so when I asked to watch the movie with the little girl with black hair on the front they didn't look and just said "Sure, but not on this tv I'm using it" Little me ran back to my moms room cause it had a dvd player and a tv. I watched up until the last 20 minutes when my mom came home from work and caught me. She turned it off and I told her that if I didn't finish the movie I'd have nightmares and never sleep. So my mother defeated by my 5 year old tantrum put it back on and she watched the rest with me. Little did she realize this would awaken a passion in me 😂 So I'm glad it's getting covered in the kill count finally, especially the original.
  • I love the twist, honestly. There's something so chilling about the idea that you've done all this work to try and lift a terrible curse, only for it to turn out that the one responsible for it is just truly evil, and the only way to escape it is to spread that evil.

"His interests include dinosaurs and Danny Gonzalez" Holy shit James is Greg!

I always found it interesting that the japanese version never tells the characters about the 7 days on the phone, it was briefly mentioned as part of the urban legend but turned out to be false when it comes to the actual curse. Hinting that Sadako most likely tailored her curse after the urban legend. The American version then just straight up made it a part of the curse lol
  • Been waiting ages for James to cover this, I’m so glad he didn’t just skip this for the American remake.

This has been an insane year in terms of this channel, the horror genre and life in general, but I'm glad that Dead Meat is still strong. I can't wait for what comes next year.
  • @quentinwelch76
I hope this is an introduction to more Japanese horror movies from the 90’s/early 2000’s because that’s an amazing sub genre for horror within itself. My personal favorite.
  • @ily_3va
I love how Dead Meat goes through all kinds of horror movies from all kinds of countries and cultures, and in a respectful way but with geniune constructive criticism? Amazing.
  • @shadowlinkbds
The amount of entries that are in the ring/Ringu series is insane. Even had quite a bit of crossovers too. I don't blame James for doing all the movies right away since there's a ton so I'm satisfied for him covering the first Ringu for the moment.
  • @LiltStringbean
The American version was my first dive into horror, and I had nightmares for a year thinking Samara was going to kill me (despite the 7 day timeline). Scary Movie 3 actually really helped me get over my fear of her.
  • @AllgoodthingsTv
I'm so glad I discovered this channel! It provides an excellent way to revisit horror movies I've previously seen without dealing with the residue they might leave behind mood-wise (I'm looking at you Midsommar and The Blair Witch Project)... It's also a good way to get a preview of movies I'm on the fence about, like the Belko Experiment (pass!) or Escape Room, which I actually finished watching to James' review. Awesome job guys! (Chelsea's review of American Psycho is one of my favs)

10:39 Yoichi in Ring 2 (1999) is also referred to as a monster due to him becoming more like Sadako, an empty husk of who he formerly was. Ring 0: Birthday (2000) has the revelation of Sadako’s past in full & Sadako (2019) being a continuation of the main timeline as it was also directed by Hideo Nakata.
  • @LunetteFox
As someone who has cosplayed as Kayako it is so frustrating to constantly be called "The Ring Girl" (until I start croaking at them) but at the same time I can't blame them because The Ring helped define the vengeful ghost genre. This kind of horror is so intriguing and leaves a lasting impression

It's been a crazy, unpredictable, and kinda weird year for Dead Meat, but it's also been fun, and I glad James ended it off with this incredible film. It's a masterclass of psychological horror, still one of the scariest, most thrilling horror films I've ever seen. Sadako is one of the greatest horror icons, right up there with Freddy, Jason, and Chucky.
