Young Crowley has unstable angina and was sickly until he had spent time away from his parents. He lived in the country, chopped wood, became physically strong before he returned to his parents. He still suffered from angina and was prescribed, as he had been before time in the country, it was called laudinum (morphine), it came in tinctures. Crowley's followers could not have "stared at frightening images and while taking LSD" at the abbey. The abbey was founded in 1920 and shuttered in 1923. LSD was not synthesized until 1938 and was not discovered to have effects until 1943. By this time the Abbey had been closed for 20 years. Similarly, mushrooms were not known outside circles until scientists for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals went seeking out psychedelic drugs in the 1950. It is doubtful that Crowley would have had access to this drug as it was not purified from the raw material until 1959. Mescaline was the most likely drug used, as accounts from the era describe the copious use of alcohol, morphine, cocaine, and chloroform, as well as the occasional use of peyote/mescaline.
