Welcome to VA Claims Academy's essential guide on crafting a top 1% personal statement AKA Statement in Support of a Claim for your VA disability claim. This video is an indispensable tool for veterans seeking to navigate the complexities of the VA claims process effectively. We delve into the art and science of writing a compelling personal statement that resonates with the VA rater, boosting your chances of a successful claim.

Key Highlights of Our Guide:

Precision in Language: We begin by emphasizing the importance of understanding the VA rating criteria, particularly the impact of specific words like 'or', 'such as', and 'and' in the context of the Virginia rating criteria. These small but crucial details can significantly alter the interpretation of your claim.

Storytelling Mastery: Learn how to internalize and translate your experiences into the language of the VA rating criteria, as outlined in 38 CFR. Find the full 38 CFR here:
ecfr.io/Title-38/Part-4

Ego Management: We address the crucial aspect of managing both your ego as the claimant and the VA rater's ego. Understanding this dynamic can be pivotal in how your claim is received and assessed.

Concise and Powerful Statements: Discover the art of trimming your personal statement to perfection. Each sentence should be impactful and justify its place in your statement. We guide you on making every word count.

Personalized Statements for Each Condition: We advocate for submitting a distinct, ironclad personal statement for each condition you're claiming. This personalized approach ensures a thorough and clear presentation of each aspect of your claim.

Form 21-4138: Use this form to submit your personal statement (Statement in support of a claim). Download VA Form 21-4138 here:

  • I think this guy has some of the best explanations regarding VA disability on YouTube
  • I just want to say that I really appreciate all of your content. Not sure what all the loan shark BS is about, but your free content here on YouTube has probably helped thousands and thousands of veterans. Going through BDD now, have my exams the next couple of weeks. Im going to do statements for my big ones: Mental Health, GERD, Headaches. Thanks again!

Have the rater work WITH you, not against you. Not just on claims, but in life. That's how you "sell yourself". Love the video.
  • @JohnDewh
The (AND) (OR) is very important, this guy is good at explaining this

From my experience it’s all about a few crucial words or phrases that win or lose a claim. That’s why claims personnel know these crucial words and have a lot of success!

100% true. My and buddy statements are never more than 10 bullets stating impact, sev, freq to work then home life with keywords.

Jordan, thank you, Bro! You have put together another great video. Showing how to be clear and stay on topic in a peesonal statement, is really important. You have help me trim so much out of my personal statements. If you're like I was, submitting a 2-page personal statement, you're probably putting in too much fluff. I was for sure. Jordan, you helped me put an end to that with your approach to persoanl statement. Be mindful of the ego, that's the way to go. Best wish in the new year. Happy New year
  • @Quintanaroo2117
So my DBQ was written as I suffered stressors and injuries leading to severe depression disorder. So basically, according to your analogy I should be writing two lay statements, one explaining the stressors from deployment and the other to injuries that I occurred causing back surgery and the depression and disabilities

Great video and information. Thanks for sharing and helping Veterans. For your example of GERD do you need diagnostic tests to file claim?
