  • I'm an old timer seeing the black widow unit brings back childhood memories.
  • This is a great video which shows what it was like when Southern Pacific was still a good railroad. Thanks for all the effort you put into these presentations!

Video at 15:02 is taken from inside the North Hump yardmaster tower. The North Hump was the 2nd floor and the South Hump the 1st floor. North Hump switched westbound trains from Antelope receiving tracks 1-10 into bowl tracks 1-21. The South Hump switched eastbound trains from Antelope tracks 11-20 into bowl tracks 22-49. The yardmaster in the video is Leroy Wright who went on to become Assistant Terminal Superintendent at Roseville. Yeah, I went to work in Roseville Yard as a switchman in 1966. I also worked as a Car Retarder Operator and as a Yardmaster

So in 1913 UP & SP were forced to break up because of monopoly.......but then in 1986 the SP & SF merger was denied because of monopoly. Finally, UP was permitted to purchase or takeover SP. in 1996....What happened to the Monopoly claims???
