Ok so at the end of Squid Game we learn that it was Il-Nam all along.

The final episode reveals that he invented the games as a form of entertainment for him and his rich buddies who had become bored with life. We learn that he had actually got involved in the one that we see in the show because he was dying and wanted a final bit of fun in his life before it was too late.

The ending was absolutely incredible and the scene had Gi-Hun saying goodbye to the character as he lay on his death bed. This last meeting actually reflected their first one in which he too encountered the character as he sat in a bed.

It was a pretty big twist that really pulled the rug out from under your feet but eagle eyed viewers might have spotted early on that there were several clues pointing towards his true identity.

Now the first one is that he is Number 1, the very first player. If we look at the subtext of the series, Gi-Hun is the final number and throughout we watch as he very much works his way to first place, aka Il-Nam.

In the final episode he is left as number one, he inherits a large portion of the character's fortune and comes face to face with him in one of the final scenes. 1 is symbolic on a number of levels and because it's the first place, it also hints to us that Il-Nam is number one and the one that's controlling everything.

In episode 5 Hwang Jun-Ho sneaks through the compound and he eventually finds a storage room with files on all of the games that have happened over the decades. Upon opening up the 2020 one the first player there is actually number 2 and Il-Nam's profile is completely missing.

There is no file for Number 1 because he doesn't need or want a record kept for himself.

The other players in the game also hint towards us that something is off with Il-Nam and though it's not too obvious, when you really think about it, he wouldn't be someone that would be selected for the process.

Everyone else in the Squid Game is roughly the same age whereas he is extremly elderly.

  • the part that gave me chills afterwards was during the marble game when il-nam starts saying "this is my old house,, my kid and his friends would play games in here and i would stand in and watch but they didnt know i was here" but this is literally the entire show summed up, all of the players are kids playing games in il-nams house without knowing that hes behind it

One of the most devastating things of this series was the transition of the protagonist. From being his goofy and cheerful self to becoming the broken man with an empty stare. That really broke my heart.

Not so fun fact: In Korean culture, you must always hand a glass of water to adults with both hands as that is being respectful to them. But Gi-hun only used one hand, it just shows that he no longer respected or liked II-nam anymore after finding out that he was the one behind it all.
  • I think Il-Nam’s final moments were very poetic. Since he’s still alive on his death bed, he’s technically still a player in the squid game, so he plays one more childhood game with the final contestant: a bet, which ties it all together with the idea of greed, gambling and fun. Nam loses the bet, dies, and is finally eliminated from the game

The first reason why I thought that the old man didn’t get scared and run away at the first game was because I thought he had nothing to lose, he’s just happy that his death would be by playing his childhood games.

I must admit i cried like a baby when he goes home to his mum lying dead on the floor and says "i made some money" and then lies down beside her, really puts things into perspective that people are so busy chasing money they forget the most important things in their life and dont realise it until its to late
  • @Relixa
I also liked the connection with the marbles and the old mans apparent mental decline. (Losing his marbles, i.e his mind) but he didn't lose his marbles, he gave them away willingly.
  • I think another clue is the story he chose to tell Gi-hun about his old home: He used to watch his son and his friends play from a distance, and they wouldn't realise he was there
  • @Lilymzki
This is why when everybody was shocked at the killing on the first game.. grandpa just keep move forward with a smile.. he was thrilled
  • All of the Characters had their deaths foreshadowed Ali- "Stole" (not really since it was his paycheck) his money from his boss. In return, Sang-woo secretively stole his marbles during the marble game the gangster- jumped off the bridge to escape the mafia. He later died on the bridge game as he was pulled along. Sae-byok- Threatened to kill the smuggler by pointing a knife at his neck. She later was killed as she was stabbed, on the exact same spot Sang woo- Failed suicide attempt (the scene where he was in the bath tub). Ended up killing himself on the final game
  • @kanato6179
I really thought they didn't show his death in the marbles game, because the director thought it would be too crude to show the death of an old man point-blank, perhaps out of criticism or fear that the public would take it too obscene, they fooled me very well , and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought the same thing lmao.
  • @LesterBrunt
What I noticed is that Il nam was one of the only ones who was actually happy when he succeeded. Look at that big smile as he crosses the finish line in the first game. Or after the tug of war the winners are laying on the ground with torment on their faces while Il-Nam seems super content.
  • @Alotofmangos
Episode 6 was by far the most depressing one. The two girls, Ali, and Il nam were all scenes that made me tear up back to back to back
  • @oneiz7076
The EPISODE 6 of 'Squid Game' is the most heartbreaking specially the part where jiyeong sacrificed her marble for saebyeok and even thanked her for playing or teaming up with her.
  • 001 didn’t choose his shape for the second game. He took the only shape that was left from his “friends”
  • @bradpara
He doesn’t give his name in front so Soon-woo. This is because Soon-woo once worked in finance and Ill-nam said that he “gave people money 💰 “ that is, he was a banker. If he gave his name to Soon-woo, he would have likely recognized it and that would have blown his cover.
  • @Meijibby
The most painful death here is ali like he literally got betrayed and how he called sangwoo hyung makes me even cry lol
  • @ThanamasLuv
Ali's death made me so damn mad. He was such a precious character.

The star is not at all easier than the triangle. The small edges make it easier to snap a point off of the star. The triangle really is the only shape that is actually easy.
