The French Verb Faillir in Less Than 5 Minutes

Published 2023-11-01
Today's French lesson is all about the verb FAILLIR in French. Faillir doesn't really have an exact translation in English, at least not as a verb. In French, faillir means "To almost do something." It's always followed by an infinitive verb and primarily conjugated in the passé composé with avoir.

In Old and Middle French "faillir" used to mean "to fail", and this sense is retained to date in formal speech as "faillir à qch''(=to fall short of sth).
