One of the worst kept secrets in recent history is finally on my desk, with nVidia launching the RTX 4070 Super this week. At $599, it features 20% More CUDA cores than the RTX 4070, and according to nVidia, is faster than an RTX 3090.

But, boisterous claims aside, I wanted to find out if we finally have the perfect candidate to upgrade your high end GTX 1080 or RTX 2080 GPU. There hasn't been a GPU under $1000 to get excited about since before 2020, and owners of high end 10 and 20 series cards have been searching for an upgrade path. Is the 4070 Super the GPU you've been looking for, or should you just move along?

But first... What am I drinking???

“Inflation… or corporate profit racketeering” Finally someone else who understands this particular round of inflation was not actually due to classical cost push or demand pull factors, pure greedflation.
  • @Swindy
Absolutely thank you for testing the 2080 Ti. I've been pulling my hair out trying to find some solid numbers to compare the 4070S with!
  • @kirbyatethanos
That 4070 Ti Super and 4080 Super will be the upgrade for many 2080/1080 Ti users. I myself went from a 2060 KO to a 4080 Suprim X.

the thing i don't like about that card is the 12GB VRAM buffer at $600, especially since i like to play around with tensorflow and want to keep my GPU for at least 5 or so years I'd rather have 16GB or more, tho by the time I have the money to upgrade my desktop it'll be late 2024 so blackwell might be right around the corner

I love seeing older top tier hardware being compared to newer mid tier hardware. Thanks for a great review!!!
  • Anything that uses the “catch fire” 12V-HPWR connector is something I’ll be avoiding…
  • I want to upgrade from my RTX 3060 12GB but with the recent release of FSR mods on recent games, I'm really wondering if I won't wait a bit longer... 🤔 The problem is I love Ray Tracing, and even if I only play @ 1080p, I have some big fps drops on some games...
  • Selfishly, I want to see some numbers for a virtual gaming use case: specifically using proxmox and streaming via parsec on a smaller subset of cards. This is a very niche use case, but I think you're uniquely positioned to provide those numbers to the dozens of us who care. I'm using a 3060 12GB right now and am interested in what my next gently used or new upgrade splurge will be.

Thanks for this video. I found it baffling how none big tech reviewers that I read except TechPowerUp had the 3090 in their GPU lineups consider the claim Nvidia made.
  • @pyroslev
Can't wait to see where the 7600 XT fits into these charts. Which I love the formatting of them this go around. A lot of data but presented in a very clean fashion.
  • @stevefxp
Hey Jeff...I have a 3090 in my gaming rig, so not changing that out. What I am looking for is a good bang for the buck GPU for video editing and transcoding. Any thoughts?
  • @DrewWalton
Picked up a used 3090 for $650 last June, still not mad about it!
  • @user-mg6me6hl5c
As a non-gamer that uses my GPU to do graphics and calculations I would like to see how this compares for work. Tasks such as mass photo corrections/re-sizing or CAD style processes that some of us offload to our GPU's.
  • @scyzorpl
Hi great video but can you help me i wanna upgrade my 3060ti and i'm on ryzen 7 5800x with 850 w psu what's a good card for a upgrade from team red ?
  • @dotxyn
Sitting here with my 2080ti+10% OC thinking I may keep it a bit longer. Drop a couple settings down from ultra, add DLSS, and you've made up the difference. However, I will say the 4070 Ti Super is tempting. You did a good job with this review, thanks Jeff!
  • @DerekKnop
Just wondering if you checked power usage at different load levels? Big Green is touting the power efficiency of the 40 cards and I would like to know how much less power it is using to get that 3090 performance, if it is in fact lower.
  • @charsiuwu8084
I switched to a 7800 xt when I saw the prices here in Canada for the 40 series. This would be very compelling, but for me a little too little too late.
  • @saturnotaku
I was planning to do a complete platform upgrade this spring from my Ryzen 5000 desktop. Instead I'm going to hold onto it, installing an RTX 4060 that I got open box for $230. That will be more than enough to get me by until the next generation of CPUs and GPUs are announced later this year/early next.
  • @unlucky1307
I'm still perfectly happy running my 1080ti for the moment. Going to hold off until the 50 series hits, potentially even longer.
