Japan. The island archipelago off the coast of the orient. The Land of the Rising Sun. We know a lot about this little nation thanks to the tales of Europeans authors who wrote about the mysterious closed country. Tales of Samurai, Ninja and the Shogun. But what was once an isolated and regressed society would be transformed into the megalith of the Japanese Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.

  • Is no one gonna talk about how long this took to animate? Props to the animator for quality content. 👌

Mongols: Surrender or we'll use force gets rekt by typhoon Japan: Huh, neat.

17:40 "The German soldiers were so impressed with the Japanese army that they openly admired them, and even showed them a sign of great respect as they paraded through the city." This was a victory parade, and the defeated German soldiers were ordered to be there to show respect. The reason they turned their backs to the British, when their contingent of the parade passed by, was because the British soldiers in the parade hadn't done any of the fighting. They had used colonial troops, but it wasn't the colonial troops who were parading.

For anyone using this video as a textbook: 02:50 平安京 HEIAN KYO (in video: HEIAN KYO 飛鳥) *飛鳥 reads ASUKA 03:14 橘 TACHIBANA (in video: TACHIBANA 平安) *平安 is HEIAN. And yes, it should be pronounced as tachiBAna, not tachiKAna. 03:30 HOGEN (pronounced hoh-g’en, not hoh-JEN) 保元の乱 (Hogen-no-ran), for anyone interested. 05:43 鎌倉 KAMAKURA (in video: 鎌倉市) *鎌倉市 is City of Kamakura (Kamakura-shi), which is a present-day municipality in Kanagawa pref. 05:45 BAKUFU is BAKUFU, not BAFUKU. 幕府(Bakufu), for anyone curious. 05:57 守護 SHUGO (in video SHOGO) 08:43 MUROMACHI 室町時代 (in video: ASHIKAGA 室町時代) *The era was MUROMACHI (室町), the name of Shogun was ASHIKAGA (足利) 08:55 DAIMYO 大名 (in video: DIAMYO 大名) 09:26 GEKOKUJO 下剋上 (in video: GEKOJUKO 下剋上) 10:41 一向一揆 (pronounced: IKKO-IKKI) wasn’t really a Daimyo but rather rebellious groups of people 10:57 朝鮮 JOSEON (in video: 大北朝鮮) No country is named as 大北朝鮮, but if it were literally translated that’d read “Great North Korea.” Kim is thrilled. 11:18 SEKIGAHARA (in video: SHEKIGAHARA). 関ヶ原(Sekigahara), for anyone wondering. 11:51 Qing (清) or Great Qing (大清). In video: 大慶, which I don’t recall China had such dynasty. 13:05 Overly stereotypical geisha and building depictions aside, the tumbleweed was never common in Japan 15:16 東京へ/ようこそ (in video: 東京へよ/うこそ) 16:33 RYUKYU (in video: RYUKU) 18:30 MANCHUKUO (満州国) or Empire of Manchuria (満州帝国). In video: MANCHUKUO(満州帝国) 20:39 マレー MALAYA (in video: マレーシア MALAYA). マレーシア(Malaysia) is a present day country Malaysia. 22:45 韓国(Hanguk) refers to present day South Korea, in South Korean language. In north, South Korea is called Nam-choson (South-Joseon) Great video, education is indeed really important.
