It’s simple, star NBA players don’t care about the tournaments in between the Olympics, whereas the international players do. The pride/no money factor plays a bigger role here. They barely care about the Olympics most of the time. International players care more about representing their country more then Americans because of selfishness/ego and it’s understandable to a certain extent.
  • This specific team was FR Yugoslavia, which was later renamed Serbia & Montenegro (later just Serbia), but Yugoslavia itself eventually became 7 different countries, so you could say Yugoslavia is where both Jokic and Luka are from.

The problem with American basketball in general, and NBA basketball in particular, is that the game has been totally disrespected. Offensive play is clearlhy favored, and the most complex strategy is the pick and roll. Big ,men are useless (with a few exceptions) and coaches are merely an ornament. A lot of iso, a lot of "this is my team", and amazing athletic displays, but lack of fundamentals and team play. The US has amazing players and the pool to choose from is huge (most countries in Europe are smaller than some states in the US), but the way the game is being played and officiated has had a negative overall effect. To me, it is a lot more interesting to watch a Euroleague game than an NBA game, even though there is less individual talent. The game has a lot more intricacies and, thus, more interesting. Strategy is more complex, and team play is favored over iso play.

Being argentinian, I still remember that Argentina vs USA game. I had a class that ended somewhere during the third quarter, I didn't mind because I thought the loss was a given. I saw on TV, once I got out of the class that Argentina was actually ahead on the score and ran home, around 500 meters, at top speed to catch the end of the game. That game, and that argentinian team, was INSANE. PS: Every single argentinian basketball junkie is still fuming over the no-call on the foul over Sconochini at the end of the final game.

I was 21 at that time and remember it really well. Back in Serbia we were confident that we would beat USA because player for player ours was better team and we were ruling World Champions at that time. Dejan Bodiroga would be a great star in the NBA but he never cared about going to the NBA. Also remember that Arenas were mostly empty...one of our news reporter were walking around the arena and asking the random passersby if they knew what event is holding in the arena, most of the people didn't know nor cared.

My man, Serbia is not the successor state of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia consisted of what is now Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia. It simply no longer exists.

This is what I always think of every time Paul pierce starts talking about how great he was

Who’s watching this right after they were eliminated by Germany in 2023 lol
  • @TonyRealTalk07
Damn! You didn’t mention that PR won against the USA at 2004 too, before Argentina in that tournament

As someone who speaks Serbian i can confirm vlade divac is pronounced "vlayd deevak". Good work bro. Only thing i would add is that peja Stojakovic is pronounced "peya stodjakoveek". His surname means 100 students

Basketball was bound to become a worldwide phenomenon. Like soccer, it is cheap to play. You need a ball and a hoop; everything else is luxury to the poor player. Also, it can be played in tight, urban environments, something even soccer struggles with. I love the game and have since the days of Connie Hawkins, Pete Maravich, and Julius Erving. I just wish they'd de-emphasize the 3-pointer a bit and bring the game back inside somewhat.
  • @maxiaguirre
By 1996 the gap was already smaller, and in 2000 the game against Lithuania was super tense

for me 2004 roster for usa was the worst. they had melo, wade, lbj. marbury. iverson, richard jefferson// and their bigman were stoudemire, duncan, odom, boozer and okafor but still lost to puerto rico

Lebron lost in 2004 Olympics. MJ won 2. Maybe we should look into that 2004 Athens Olympics.
